Step One: Match the Lift to the Work, Not the Sticker Price

Wheel bearing service on daily-driver sedans and light trucks doesn’t need a 12,000 lb two-post — it needs consistent access to the hub and rotor at a comfortable working height, fast cycle time, and a low profile that doesn’t eat your bay’s headroom. That’s exactly what a mid rise scissor lift is built for. We size these based on your actual vehicle mix: if you’re mostly cars and crossovers, a 6,000-7,000 lb capacity unit is plenty and keeps the price down. If half your bay sees three-quarter-ton pickups with tools still in the bed, you want more capacity and a wider platform, and the price step-up is worth it.

Where shops get burned is buying capacity they’ll never use because a salesman upsold them, or worse, buying capacity they need less of than they think and finding out the lift struggles with a loaded truck. Slab thickness is the one people skip and regret. A flush-mounted or surface-mount mid rise scissor lift still needs adequate concrete to anchor into, and older Iowa shop buildings sometimes have thinner slabs than current code calls for. We check this on every site visit with a core sample or existing engineering drawings if you have them. If your slab won’t support the anchor pattern, we tell you before you spend a dime, and we lay out what a slab section replacement costs so it’s not a surprise mid-project.

Step Three: Surface Mount vs. Flush Mount — Pick Based on Your Floor, Not Aesthetics

Surface-mount mid rise scissor lifts sit on top of your existing floor and bolt down — faster install, lower cost, and the ramps handle the height transition. Flush-mount units get set into a pit so the platform sits level with the shop floor, which is cleaner for foot traffic and rolling toolboxes across the bay, but it requires cutting concrete and adds real cost and downtime during install.

For a new build-out, we usually recommend planning the pit into your slab pour from day one if budget allows — it’s dramatically cheaper to form it during construction than to cut an existing floor later. For an existing shop retrofitting a bay, surface mount is almost always the practical answer unless you have a specific reason to go flush, like a quick-lube-style traffic pattern where cars need to roll straight through. We’ve done both across central Iowa shops and the right call depends entirely on whether you’re building new or retrofitting.

Step Four: Power, Air, and the Electrical Run You Forgot About

Every mid rise scissor lift needs a dedicated electrical circuit sized to the hydraulic pump motor, and most shops we walk into have the outlet in the wrong place or on a circuit already shared with an air compressor. Plan the electrical run when you’re still framing the bay, not after the lift is sitting on your floor. We’ll give you the exact voltage, amperage, and disconnect requirements for the specific unit you’re buying so your electrician can rough it in correctly the first time.

Air lines matter too if your lift has pneumatic locks or you’re running impact tools right next to it for wheel bearing removal. Keep the air drop close enough that you’re not dragging hose across the platform where a tech could trip during a bearing swap. We see more near-misses from hose and cord clutter around lifts than from the lift itself — build the utility layout around the lift’s footprint, not the other way around.

Step Five: Anchoring and the Inspection That Actually Protects You

A mid rise scissor lift is only as safe as its anchors. We follow ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) anchoring specs on every install, torque to spec, and document it. This isn’t paperwork theater — an under-anchored lift can walk or tip under an off-center load, and wheel bearing work often puts asymmetric weight on the platform when a tech is leaning into one corner with a breaker bar.

After install, we run a full inspection: lock engagement, hydraulic seal check, cable or chain tension if applicable, and a load test. We recommend annual inspections after that, and we’ll flag anything that’s drifted out of spec before it becomes a safety issue or a shop liability problem. Insurance carriers increasingly ask for documented lift inspections, and having that paper trail from a professional installer matters if you ever have a claim.

Step Six: Training Your Techs on the Platform

The biggest risk with any scissor-style lift is a tech positioning the vehicle wrong or standing in the pinch zone during lowering. We walk through proper vehicle positioning, lock engagement, and lowering procedure with every crew during install — it takes fifteen minutes and it’s the cheapest insurance you’ll ever get.

For wheel bearing work specifically, remind techs that the platform can shift feel under an unbalanced load when a wheel and hub assembly come off one corner. Teach them to keep the vehicle centered and to never work under a scissor lift that isn’t fully locked. It sounds obvious until someone’s in a hurry on a Friday afternoon with three more cars waiting.

Step Seven: Planning Your Bay for Growth

If this is your first mid rise scissor lift, think about whether you’ll want a second one in eighteen months. Leaving extra floor space and roughing in a second electrical drop now costs almost nothing compared to retrofitting later.
