Start With Ceiling Height, Not the Lift Spec Sheet
Before you even look at a mid rise scissor lift catalog, go measure your garage ceiling at the lowest point, including any garage door tracks, light fixtures, or HVAC ductwork that hangs down. A lot of hobbyist buyers assume they need clearance for a full-rise lift, but a mid rise scissor lift only needs to raise a vehicle to a comfortable working height, usually in the 3 to 4 foot range, which makes it a far better fit for garages with 9 or 10 foot ceilings. That’s one of the main reasons this style is so popular in older western Illinois homes and outbuildings that weren’t built with towering ceiling heights in mind.
Don’t forget to account for the vehicle itself sitting on top of the platform. A raised pickup or SUV adds real height on top of the lift’s rise, and if you’re planning to run underneath comfortably rather than crouching, you need that number in hand before you order anything. We’d rather talk you through the math on a call than have you discover a six-inch shortfall after the lift is bolted down.
Decide Flush-Mount or Portable Before You Finish the Floor
This is the single biggest sequencing decision in any garage build-out. A flush-mounted mid rise scissor lift sits in a pit cut into the concrete so the platform is level with the floor when lowered, which is great for foot traffic and looks clean, but it has to be planned before the slab goes in or as a full saw-cut retrofit afterward. A portable or surface-mount version sits on top of finished concrete and can be moved or removed later, which is the more forgiving choice if you’re not 100% sure yet how you’ll use the space.
For a lot of weekend hobbyist setups, we actually recommend surface-mount first. It’s less committal, it can go in after the floor is already poured and cured, and it still gets you the working height you need for routine maintenance. If you already know this garage is a permanent shop, flush-mount is worth the extra planning. Either way, tell your concrete contractor about the lift before they finish the floor, not after.
Power, Air, and the Utility Rough-In
Most mid rise scissor lifts run on a single-phase electric/hydraulic power unit, and some need compressed air for the safety locks. If you’re framing out a new garage or converting an outbuilding, this is the point to run a dedicated circuit and an air line stub to wherever the lift will sit, even if the lift itself is still months away from arriving. Trying to fish wire through finished drywall later is a miserable, avoidable job.
We tell people to overbuild slightly on capacity here. A 220V circuit sized for the lift plus a little headroom covers you if you add a second piece of equipment down the road, like a tire changer or a compressor upgrade. It’s a small extra cost during framing and a big pain to add later.
Floor Load and Anchor Requirements
A mid rise scissor lift is lighter and puts less concentrated stress on the floor than a two-post lift, but it still needs a slab of adequate thickness and cure time before anchoring, typically 4 inches of properly cured concrete at minimum, more if your soil conditions in the area are soft or expansive. Western Illinois has a mix of soil types, and older outbuildings sometimes have thinner or cracked slabs that need addressing before anything gets bolted down.
If you’re not sure what’s under your existing floor, it’s worth having someone check before the lift shows up on a truck. We’d rather flag a marginal slab during the planning call than have a customer discover it during anchor installation.
Where the Lift Sits Relative to Your Workflow
Think through how you actually move around the garage before you pick a spot. A mid rise scissor lift needs clear space on both sides for a technician to walk under and around the vehicle, plus room to open doors fully if you’re doing interior work while it’s elevated. Cramming it into a corner because that’s where the floor happened to be empty defeats a lot of the convenience you’re paying for.
Also think about your other equipment. If you’ve got a tool chest, workbench, or a second vehicle bay, map out the whole layout on paper first. It’s a lot cheaper to move a chalk line than to move an installed lift.
Weight Capacity Versus What You Actually Drive
Buyers frequently oversize or undersize this decision. If your garage sees a daily-driver sedan and an occasional pickup, a mid rise scissor lift in the 6,000 to 9,000 lb range usually covers it comfortably. If you’re regularly working on a loaded pickup or a truck with a job box and tools on board, size up — that extra weight adds up fast and it’s not worth pushing a lift near its rated limit.
Buy for the heaviest vehicle you’ll realistically put on it, not the average. It’s a lot cheaper to buy the right capacity once than to replace an undersized lift in three years.
Get the Install Scheduled Before the Lift Arrives
The last piece of sequencing: don’t let the lift sit in a crate in your garage for weeks waiting on installation. Have your electrician, your concrete work, and your installer lined up so the lift goes from delivery to bolted-down and certified in a tight window. That keeps your build-out moving and keeps a very heavy, awkward crate out of your way.
