Every mid rise scissor lift uses a mechanical safety lock system, typically a toothed rack or notched bar paired with a spring-loaded cam or pawl that engages automatically as the platform rises. As the scissor mechanism extends, the cam clicks into successive notches, and if hydraulic pressure were to fail at any point, the mechanical lock — not the hydraulics — is what actually holds the vehicle in place. This is a critical distinction for dealership techs to understand: the hydraulic cylinder raises the platform, but the safety-cam is the load-bearing safety device once the lift is parked at height.

In a properly functioning system, lowering the platform requires the technician to actively release the safety-cam, usually via a release handle or foot pedal that must be held or actuated before the lift will descend. This prevents accidental lowering while someone’s underneath the vehicle.
