Move up to six or eight columns rated for heavier trucks and chassis work, and you’re in a different budget bracket entirely. The tradeoff is floor clearance. Baseplate columns sit directly on the shop floor, and the carriage arms need clearance to swing under the frame rails or axle. On a lowered muscle car or a vehicle with a body kit, that clearance can be tight. Overhead Columns: When Ground Clearance Is the Problem

If your bay regularly sees heavier project trucks, or if you’re doing frame-off restorations where the columns need to support a bare chassis unevenly loaded, a six or eight column set gives you more support points and more margin.
