Myth 1: Columns Are Only for Heavy Trucks and Fleets
This is the myth we hear most, and it’s the one that kept our Sioux City customer away from columns the longest. He assumed mobile column lifts for cars were a fleet-shop tool sized for service trucks and box trucks, not something that made sense for a shop full of 3-Series and A4s. For European cars specifically, this matters more than people think. Columns lift from the tires, so the vehicle’s specific pickup points become a non-issue.
Myth 2: You Can’t Do Real Tire and Wheel Work on Columns
The second myth is that mobile column lifts for cars aren’t suited to tire rotation and wheel work because the tires themselves are what’s being lifted. This is only half true, and it’s the half that misses the point. Once the vehicle is up on all four columns, the tires are unweighted, which is exactly the condition you want for rotation, wheel balancing prep, and any suspension inspection. Where this myth has a kernel of truth is if you need to pull a wheel off entirely while the vehicle sits only on that column — for that, most shops add a set of jack stands or rolling bridge supports under the frame once the vehicle is at height, which takes seconds and is standard practice.
Myth 3: Layout Has to Be Sacrificed for Flexibility
The third myth is about bay layout, and it’s the one that actually cost this shop money before we got involved. The previous assumption was that mobile column lifts for cars require dedicating permanent floor space to charging stations, cabling, and column storage, eating into the tight footprint of a specialty import bay. We redesigned his layout around wireless column communication and slim charging docks mounted along the wall rather than the floor, which freed up nearly a full bay width he’d been losing to a lift he thought he needed but never used efficiently.
The workflow gain was immediate. Techs now roll columns into position for whichever vehicle is next — a wheel alignment check on an A6, a brake job on a 3-Series, a full inspection on a Sprinter van — without repositioning a fixed lift or waiting for a bay to free up. Columns store against the wall when not in use, so the shop floor stays open for vehicle staging, which was the single biggest complaint customers had about the old layout.
Myth 4: Columns Are Slower Than a Fixed Two-Post
People assume four (or six) columns take longer to set up than walking a vehicle onto a two-post and swinging arms into place. In practice, once techs get comfortable with the synchronized lifting controls, mobile column lifts for cars are often faster for mixed-vehicle days because there’s no arm adjustment at all — just position, lift, work. Speed compounds across a day. A shop doing six to eight tire and wheel jobs plus a couple of brake or suspension jobs saves real minutes on every single vehicle, and those minutes add up to an extra job or two by close.
Myth 5: Columns Can’t Handle Heavier SUVs and Sprinters
Because European shops increasingly service SUVs and Sprinter-based vans alongside sedans, there’s a lingering myth that mobile column lifts for cars top out too low for that mixed traffic. Column sets are sold in configurations up to and beyond 20,000 lbs system capacity, meaning a shop can lift a loaded Sprinter van on the same equipment used for a sedan an hour earlier, provided the set is sized correctly during planning.

What We’d Tell Any European Specialty Shop Considering Columns
If you’re running a European-marque shop and still avoiding columns because of something you heard secondhand, get the actual numbers before you decide. Vehicle weight range, bay dimensions, tire and wheel volume per week, and whether you’re planning to add SUV or van service all change the right configuration, but none of them are reasons to rule out mobile column lifts for cars outright.
