Start with capacity. Add up your heaviest car’s curb weight plus full fuel, ballast, and driver gear, then divide by the number of columns you’re planning to run — most race applications land on a 4-column set for full stability during brake bleeding and corner work. From there, if your budget is tight and you’re running open-wheel or low-clearance bodywork, baseplate sets get you into the game at a lower cost point with faster setup times trackside.

If your series mandates overhead synchronization or you’re running taller GT-style bodywork without underbody clearance concerns, overhead columns are worth the added cost. Next, decide on wireless versus wired control — wireless is standard now and lets one operator manage all four columns from a single handheld, which matters when your crew is three people deep during a pit stop. Finally, factor in transport: columns need to survive being loaded and unloaded from a trailer every event weekend, so look at column weight, handle design, and how the units stack. Rotor Swaps and Brake Bleeding: Getting the Height Right
