Mobile column lifts don’t get talked about as much as two-post or four-post equipment, but for a builder running an off-road and overlanding operation in east-central Iowa, they turned out to be the better fit for a shop doing constant tire and wheel work on trucks that aren’t exactly stock-height anymore. We recently helped size and install a set for a shop like this, and the project is a good real-world case study for anyone weighing columns against a traditional lift — including what they cost to own, how well they hold up, and what they’re worth if the shop ever decides to sell the equipment down the road.

The Shop and the Problem
This particular customer builds and services off-road and overlanding trucks — think lifted three-quarter-ton pickups, oversized tires, aftermarket suspension, and vehicles that no longer sit at factory ride height. Their existing setup was a pair of aging two-post lifts that worked fine for general repair but were a poor match for the volume of tire rotation and wheel work the shop actually does day to day. Lifted trucks with wide aftermarket tires are awkward to position on a two-post arm layout, and swapping wheels on a vehicle hanging from arms under the frame isn’t as clean as having all four corners free and accessible.
They’d also outgrown their floor plan. Two fixed two-post lifts anchored to the slab meant two bays permanently committed to lift service, regardless of what else needed space that day. For a shop building trucks that vary wildly in wheelbase and width — some daily-driver overlanding rigs, some full off-road race builds — a fixed lift footprint kept forcing awkward compromises. That’s the exact problem mobile column lifts are built to solve, and it’s why they came up in our first conversation.
Why Columns Won for This Application
For a shop centered on tire rotation and wheel work, mobile column lifts offer one advantage that’s hard to overstate: the vehicle’s wheels hang completely free once it’s up, on all four corners, at whatever height the tech needs. That’s the ideal position for wheel swaps, tire rotations, alignment prep, and brake work — all things this shop does constantly on customer trucks that already have wheels and tires worth thousands of dollars sitting in the shop waiting to go on.
The other deciding factor was flexibility with vehicle size. This shop sees everything from stock-height trucks to builds sitting on 37s and 40s with significant lift kits, and column sets don’t care about wheelbase or track width the way a fixed two-post arm configuration does. We spec’d a set capable of handling their heaviest three-quarter-ton builds with lift kits and armor added, and the same set handles their smallest daily-driver project without any adjustment beyond column spacing. That kind of range across a fleet of very different trucks is difficult to get out of a fixed lift without buying multiple lift types.
Sizing the Set Correctly
Getting the capacity right matters more for a build shop than almost any other application we deal with, because these trucks don’t weigh what a factory spec sheet says. Add a winch bumper, a slide-in bed system, armor, and a bigger fuel tank, and a three-quarter-ton truck can carry substantially more weight than its base curb weight suggests. We walked through the shop’s heaviest realistic build — a loaded three-quarter-ton with full armor and recovery gear — and sized the column set with real margin above that number, rather than sizing to the truck’s factory rating.
We also talked through column count. A four-column set gives more flexibility for longer wheelbase trucks and lets the shop lift two smaller vehicles independently when needed, compared to committing to a single large four-truck lift arrangement. For a shop with this much variation in vehicle size, that flexibility ended up being worth more than squeezing out marginal cost savings on a smaller set. Mobile column lifts scale well this way — you can add columns to an existing set later if the shop’s needs grow, which isn’t something you can do with a fixed lift.
Daily Use: Tire and Wheel Work in Practice
Once installed, the shop’s workflow changed noticeably. A truck comes in for tire rotation or a wheel swap, the columns roll into position under the frame rails, and the whole vehicle goes up evenly with all four wheels hanging free and fully accessible. For a shop doing this dozens of times a week across different truck sizes, the time savings versus repositioning a truck on a two-post lift and dealing with arm placement around aftermarket rock sliders and skid plates added up fast.
The techs also mentioned that having the wheels totally clear of the ground, rather than resting on ramps or ratchet straps for oversized tires, made rotations and wheel-and-tire package swaps noticeably faster and safer. On lifted trucks with big aftermarket tires, that clearance matters — you’re not fighting bulk or tire diameter to get a wheel off and on. The shop kept their existing two-post lifts for general mechanical repair, but tire rotation and wheel work moved almost entirely to the column set within the first few weeks.
Cost of Ownership Over Time
Mobile column lifts carry a higher upfront cost per unit of lift capacity than a comparable two-post, largely because you’re buying portability, independent power units per column, and a synchronization system. For this shop, that upfront investment was offset by not needing to build out a second dedicated lift bay with floor anchoring, and by getting equipment that could flex with a business model built around variable truck sizes.
Ongoing maintenance on a column set is comparable to any hydraulic lift — periodic fluid checks, cable or screw-drive inspection depending on the model, and battery maintenance if the units run on rechargeable packs rather than a shop air or power line. For a shop running the equipment daily rather than occasionally, we recommend a professional inspection at least once a year, sometimes twice depending on cycle count. This shop’s usage put them solidly in the twice-a-year camp given how much tire and wheel work runs through the columns weekly.
Trade-In and Resale Value
This is where the case study gets interesting for anyone thinking long-term. Mobile column lifts tend to hold value well in the used equipment market compared to fixed lifts, largely because they’re not tied to a specific building or floor plan. A used two-post lift is only worth what it’s worth to a buyer with a compatible bay and the willingness to anchor new equipment into their slab. A used column set is worth close to the same thing to almost any buyer, because it needs no floor prep and can be resold to a shop with a completely different layout.
We talked with this shop about resale specifically because they’ve grown twice already in five years and may relocate again. Well-maintained mobile column lifts with documented service history and functioning sync electronics typically retain a meaningfully higher percentage of original value at resale than comparable-capacity fixed lifts of the same age, particularly in a market like Iowa’s where shops buying and selling used equipment value the ability to move a lift without cutting it out of a slab. That portability is a real financial argument, not just an operational convenience, and it’s part of why we steered this build shop toward columns instead of adding a third fixed two-post.
