What a Rotary Air Cylinder Actually Does on a Two-Post Lift

A rotary air cylinder isn’t the main lifting mechanism on most Rotary two-post equipment — the hydraulic cylinders handle that job — but the air cylinder controls the locking mechanism that lets the arms release and swing freely once the vehicle is off the ground. On a shop that’s doing suspension and shock replacement all day, that lock-release function gets used constantly, because techs are swinging arms in and out to reposition jack stands, pull wheels, and get clear access to control arms and shock towers. A worn or leaking rotary air cylinder means arms that won’t release cleanly, which slows down every single job that comes through the bay.

We rebuild and replace these units regularly, and the failure pattern is consistent: seals dry out from age or contaminated shop air, the cylinder starts leaking down, and the tech starts fighting the release lever every time they want to move an arm. On a busy body shop doing volume shock and strut work, that’s real lost time. It’s a small, inexpensive part relative to the whole lift, but when it fails it stops the whole workflow cold. Symmetric Arms: The Straightforward Choice for General Suspension Work

Symmetric two-post lifts position the columns directly across from each other, and the arms extend equally from each column. This gives a very predictable, centered stance for the vehicle, which is genuinely useful when you’re doing suspension and shock replacement because the car doesn’t shift as much when weight comes off during teardown. Techs who are used to symmetric setups like the balance — there’s less guesswork about where the car will settle once it’s up.

The tradeoff is door access. On a symmetric lift, the front columns sit closer to the front doors, which can make it awkward to fully swing a door open on some vehicles, particularly larger trucks and SUVs that a lot of Marion-area shops see daily. If your bay does more general repair and less specifically door-heavy interior work, that tradeoff usually doesn’t matter much. For straight suspension and shock jobs where you’re rarely opening doors wide, symmetric arms are a perfectly reasonable, cost-effective pick.

Asymmetric Arms: Better Access, Different Balance Considerations

Asymmetric lifts angle the columns back and offset the arm reach, which pushes the front columns further from the vehicle’s front doors and gives techs much better clearance for full door swing and cabin access. For a body shop that also handles interior work, upholstery, or anything requiring the doors open wide while the car’s in the air, this is the more practical layout.

For pure suspension and shock replacement, the asymmetric setup still works fine — the vehicle balance is slightly different because the weight distribution across the arms isn’t identical front to back, but any competent installer sets the arms correctly and this isn’t a functional issue for shock and strut work. Where it does matter is when a heavier, longer-wheelbase vehicle sits slightly differently on asymmetric arms versus symmetric ones — something a good installer walks you through before you buy, factoring in what your shop actually services most.

How the Rotary Air Cylinder Interacts With Either Configuration

Regardless of whether you go symmetric or asymmetric, the rotary air cylinder does the same job — releasing the arm locks so the arm can swing. The difference is usage pattern. Asymmetric arms tend to get swung more often because shops using them are also doing more interior and door-access work, which means more cycles on the air cylinder and, over time, more wear on the seals. Symmetric setups used purely for suspension and shock work tend to see fewer swing cycles, so the cylinder often lasts longer in that specific use case.

Either way, the maintenance conversation is the same: keep your shop air dry, don’t let moisture sit in the line feeding the cylinder, and inspect it during your regular lift maintenance visits.
