Why a Rotary Lift Arm Fails Before Its Time

We recently fielded a call from a shop in the Grimes area whose arm broke clean off a two-post lift while a technician was mid-tire-rotation. It’s the kind of failure that stops a farm shop cold, because that lift is doing double duty on trucks, trailers, and combines all week. When we dug into it, the wear pattern told the story: years of rust creeping into the arm pins and inserts, loads shifted slightly off-center, and nobody catching it until the metal gave out. A rotary lift arm is forged to handle enormous static loads, but it’s not forgiving of neglect at the pivot points.

Most premature failures we see trace back to three things — corrosion at the arm restraint pin, worn inserts letting the arm rock under load, or a mismatched replacement part installed after the original warranty lapsed. What Rotary Actually Covers

Rotary’s standard structural warranty on lift arms typically runs for a defined number of years from the original installation date, covering manufacturing defects and premature metal fatigue under normal use. It does not cover damage from overloading, arm abuse (dropping a vehicle onto a mispositioned arm), corrosion from an outdoor or wash-bay environment, or aftermarket welding repairs. If your shop is running tire rotation and wheel service work daily, that’s normal use — a legitimate warranty claim. If a arm was bent because a truck was lifted off-center on one pad, that’s not.

The distinction matters because we’ve seen claims denied simply because the shop owner didn’t keep the original invoice or serial number tag. Rotary ties warranty coverage to the lift’s serial number, not the shop. If you bought a used lift secondhand without transferring registration, you may have zero coverage on the arm even if it’s brand new stock. Before you commit to any lift purchase — new or used — ask the seller for the original bill of sale and confirm the serial number is registered. We do this verification for every customer before we quote replacement parts, because it saves everyone a painful conversation two years down the road.

The Pre-Purchase Checklist

Here’s what we walk every southeast Iowa shop through before they spend money on a rotary lift arm, whether it’s a replacement or part of a new lift order. First, confirm the lift model and arm configuration — symmetric or asymmetric, two-stage or single-stage — because ordering the wrong arm style is the single most common return we process. Second, get the warranty term in writing, not verbally, including what voids it (overload events, non-factory welding, unauthorized modification).

Third, ask whether the warranty covers parts only or parts and labor, since a lot of shops assume labor is included and it often isn’t. Fourth, verify who’s authorized to install the arm without voiding coverage — some manufacturers require certified installation. Fifth, check whether the seller stocks the exact arm for your lift model in Iowa, because a two-week freight wait on a broken arm means a dead bay in your shop. The Claim Workflow When an Arm Actually Breaks

From there, we submit the claim directly to Rotary on your behalf, which is faster than a shop owner calling the manufacturer cold. We’ve quoted two-stage arm replacements for shops running 10,000-pound-capacity two-post lifts doing heavy truck work, and the lead time on those parts can run longer than a standard arm because they’re not sitting on every regional shelf. If your farm shop is regularly lifting one-ton trucks or equipment with unusual wheelbases, budget for the possibility that a two-stage arm replacement will take a week or two rather than being a same-day fix. Knowing that ahead of time — before the arm actually breaks — is part of why this checklist exists in the first place.

Inserts, Pins, and the Parts Nobody Thinks About

Warranty conversations almost always focus on the arm casting itself, but the inserts and pins that let a rotary lift arm slide and lock are just as critical and usually not covered once they wear out from normal friction. We’ve been called out to shops where the arms themselves are structurally fine but rusted-solid inserts meant the arm couldn’t be repositioned at all — forcing techs to work around a stuck arm rather than replacing a forty-dollar part. In one Des Moines case, front arm inserts were so rusted the shop opted to swap superstructures around the shop rather than order new arms altogether.

Inspect your inserts and pins during every routine lift service, not just when an arm visibly fails. Rust starts in wash bays and outdoor-adjacent shops long before it becomes a structural issue, and catching it early is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy for your lift. If you’re doing your own annual inspection, add insert movement and pin lubrication to the list right alongside cable and hydraulic checks — it’s a five-minute job that prevents thousand-dollar downtime later.

Bolts, Drift, and Everyday Wear Signs

Beyond outright breakage, the warning signs of a failing rotary lift arm are usually boring and easy to ignore. We regularly get calls about arms dragging or bolts working loose across a bay of older lifts — not dramatic failures, just gradual drift that technicians learn to work around instead of fixing. That’s a mistake. A dragging arm means the pivot bearing or insert is wearing unevenly, and loose mounting bolts mean the arm’s load path isn’t distributing the way it was engineered to.

Neither of those symptoms is usually covered by warranty because they’re maintenance items, not defects — but ignoring them is exactly how you end up with the kind of sudden arm failure that is a warranty claim. Walk your bay once a month, physically check bolt torque on the arm restraints, and listen for grinding or dragging when the arm swings. It takes less time than reading this article, and it’s the difference between a scheduled arm replacement and an unscheduled shutdown during your busiest tire season.
