Start With the Decision Tree: Budget First, Configuration Second

Every conversation we have about a rotary two post lift starts the same way — what’s the budget, and what’s it plus install. Restoration and alignment shops usually land somewhere between the mid four-figure range for a bare lift and closer to the upper end once a crew handles delivery, anchoring, and startup. That number branches the decision tree fast. If you’re at the lower end, you’re likely looking at a baseplate model in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range. If alignment work on longer wheelbase trucks or classic cars with heavy front clips is part of your bay, you branch toward the 10,000 lb-plus overhead or dual-arm configuration instead.

The second branch is asymmetric versus symmetric arms. Alignment techs almost always want asymmetric — it swings the vehicle’s center of gravity toward the back arms so you get full door swing and easy access to all four wheels without repositioning. If your shop does more general restoration and body work where you’re pulling engines or working underneath for extended periods, symmetric arms with a lower lift height might serve you just as well. We walk every northeast Iowa customer through this before we quote a number, because the wrong arm configuration on a rotary two post lift means fighting the equipment every single day it’s in your bay.

Ceiling Height Isn’t Optional Math

We’ve had shops budget for a 9,000 lb rotary two post lift and only measure ceiling height after the truck was already scheduled. Overhead-style two post lifts need enough clearance for the crossbar at full rise plus the height of the vehicle on the arms. In older northeast Iowa buildings — converted barns, older service stations, pole buildings retrofitted for restoration work — ceiling height under 12 feet is common, and that rules out overhead configurations entirely. Baseplate models solve this because there’s no overhead beam, just floor-anchored posts, which is exactly why we steer shorter-ceiling shops toward that configuration by default.

Measure from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, not just the roof deck — that includes ductwork, sprinkler heads, light fixtures, and any bridge crane rail. Then subtract at least a foot of buffer. If your tallest vehicle on the lift is a raised 4×4 pickup for alignment work, add that vehicle’s height to the lift’s rise before you compare it against your ceiling number. This is the single most common reason we have to change a customer’s configuration mid-quote, and it’s avoidable with a tape measure and five minutes before you ever call us.

Floor Thickness and Slab Condition Around Waterloo and Dubuque

A rotary two post lift anchors into concrete, and the anchors are only as strong as the slab. We ask every northeast Iowa customer for slab thickness and age before we schedule install. Most codes and manufacturer specs call for a minimum of 4 inches of solid, crack-free concrete rated at 3,000 PSI, though heavier-capacity lifts often want more. Older buildings in this part of the state — especially former dealership service bays or ag equipment shops converted to auto use — sometimes have thinner or patched slabs that won’t hold anchors reliably.

If you’re not sure what you’re working with, core samples or a simple visual inspection for cracking, spalling, or old patch jobs tells us most of what we need. We’d rather flag a slab issue during the site survey than have a crew arrive and discover the anchors won’t torque to spec. In a few cases we’ve recommended a small new pad be poured specifically for the lift footprint rather than trying to anchor into a compromised area of an existing floor — it costs more upfront but it’s the difference between a lift that’s solid for twenty years and one that works loose in three.

Bay Width, Column Spacing, and Vehicle Mix

Alignment and restoration shops tend to run a wider mix of vehicles than a typical quick lube — long-wheelbase trucks, low sports cars, and the occasional oversized project vehicle. Column spacing on a rotary two post lift needs to account for the widest vehicle you expect to service, with enough clearance on both sides to open doors and walk around comfortably. We generally recommend at least 12 feet of clear bay width for a standard two post installation, more if you’re regularly working on dually trucks or wide-body classics.

Don’t forget vertical column height either — taller vehicles racked up on the arms need clearance to swing doors open at full lift height, and low staggered ceilings in older buildings can clip that even when the crossbar clearance checks out fine. We map this out during the site survey using your actual vehicle mix, not a generic spec sheet, because a shop that mostly does classic car alignment has very different bay geometry needs than one flipping modern trucks.

Power Requirements and Motor Sourcing

One question we get on almost every call is about the motor — customers don’t want to end up with an unfamiliar overseas unit they can’t get parts for later. Rotary lifts use motors and hydraulic components that are sourced through established supply chains with parts availability we can back up, which is exactly why we only sell and install this brand for two post configurations. Before install day, confirm you’ve got a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit within reach of the power unit location — most rotary two post lifts run on standard shop single-phase power, but the circuit needs to be sized correctly and not shared with other high-draw equipment.

If your building is older, get an electrician to look at your panel capacity before install week. We’ve had jobs delayed because a shop’s electrical service couldn’t handle the draw once other equipment — compressors, welders, alignment racks — was running at the same time. Budgeting for a panel upgrade alongside your lift budget avoids a scramble later.

Delivery Access and Forklift Considerations

A rotary two post lift ships in heavy, awkward crates — posts, arms, hydraulic unit, and hardware all need to get from a truck into your bay. Northeast Iowa shops in older downtown buildings sometimes have narrow overhead doors or tight loading areas that complicate this more than customers expect. We ask about door height, dock or ground-level delivery, and whether you have forklift access on-site, because that determines whether our crew brings extra equipment or whether we need to coordinate around what you already have.

If you’re in a rural pole building with a large equipment door, delivery is usually simple. If you’re in a converted service station downtown with a standard garage door, we plan differently. Either way, this is a five-minute conversation during scheduling that saves a wasted trip and keeps your install on the date you actually need it.

Putting the Site Survey Together Before You Call

Before you contact us, walk your shop with a tape measure and a notepad. Record ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, bay width between existing obstacles, slab age and any visible cracking, your electrical panel capacity, and your delivery access situation. Bring your real budget number and your real vehicle mix — not the vehicle you’ll service someday, the ones actually rolling through your bay now for alignment and restoration work.
