An RV and trailer service shop in central Iowa bought a scissor lift for automotive and light-truck work about a year and a half ago, and we have been back to that building enough times since — for install, for a fluid service, for one genuinely interesting troubleshooting call — that the whole arc makes a useful story. They came to us in October, which in this state means they were already halfway into winterization season and buried in seasonal storage intake. They needed something that could take a passenger vehicle or a tow rig off the floor without eating a full bay, and they needed it working before the first hard freeze. Here is what that first year actually looked like, including the arm-configuration debate we had before they signed anything.

October: The Problem They Walked In With

Their building runs long and narrow — plenty of depth for a fifth-wheel, not much width to spare on either side. Two bays were permanently committed to trailer work with jack stands and a floor crane. The third bay was where everything else happened: brake jobs on customer tow vehicles, suspension work on the shop’s own trucks, and in the fall, a rotating queue of stored cars getting a pre-storage service. They had been doing all of it on a floor jack and stands, which works right up until the day it costs you three hours on a job that should have taken one.

The obvious answer was a two-post, and we priced one. But the columns would have narrowed the working aisle enough to make trailer maneuvering in the adjacent bay a real headache, and the owner did not want to lose the flexibility to roll a generator cart or a parts rack through that space. That is a common reason a scissor lift for automotive work wins over a two-post — not because it is better at lifting cars, but because it is better at not being in the way when it is down. We walked the slab, measured the aisle, and put together two options: a full-rise scissor with standing clearance, and a lower-cost mid-rise portable. They took the full-rise, and in hindsight that was correct for their mix of work.

The Symmetric vs Asymmetric Conversation We Had Anyway

Here is where the conversation got interesting. The shop owner had been reading about symmetric and asymmetric arm configurations and wanted to know which one his new lift was. It is a fair question with a slightly awkward answer: symmetric versus asymmetric is fundamentally a two-post concept. On a two-post, symmetric means the columns face each other directly and the vehicle sits centered between them with roughly equal weight fore and aft — good for trucks and vans, but the doors open into the columns. Asymmetric rotates the columns and shifts the vehicle rearward so the driver’s door clears, which is why most car-focused shops run asymmetric.

A scissor lift for automotive service does not have columns, so the arm question does not apply the same way. What it does have is platform length, pad placement, and in some designs, extendable or adjustable pads that let you set contact points at the manufacturer’s lift points instead of wherever the platform happens to sit. That is the equivalent decision. For this shop, the mix of long-wheelbase tow vehicles and short passenger cars meant we wanted a platform with generous adjustability and a runway long enough to handle a crew-cab pickup without the rear tires hanging past the end. We also talked through what they would give up — you cannot swing all four doors open the way you can on a well-set asymmetric two-post, because the platform is under the rockers. For a shop doing mostly underbody and wheel work, that turned out to be a non-issue. If they had been doing interior work or a lot of glass, we would have pushed them the other direction.

Install Week: Slab, Anchors, and One Surprise

Install happened in early November. The slab was newer than we expected — the building had been re-poured in a previous renovation — and a test drill confirmed we had well over the four-inch minimum of good concrete. That is not always the case. We have walked into central Iowa pole buildings where the slab was three and a half inches over questionable base, and in those situations the honest answer is either cut and pour footings or choose a portable unit that does not anchor. Nobody enjoys that conversation, but it is far better than the alternative.

The surprise was electrical. The shop had a 220V single phase circuit already run to that corner from an old welder drop, and everyone assumed we would just tie into it. Their electrician checked the conductor size and found it undersized for the continuous draw of a hydraulic power unit under load. Ten minutes of checking prevented a nuisance-trip problem that would have looked like a lift defect for months. We coordinated a new dedicated circuit with a disconnect within sight of the unit, and the install finished the following day. Once powered, we cycled the lift empty through full travel, then loaded it with a shop pickup and cycled it again, listening for uneven platform rise and watching the mechanical safety locks engage. Locks on this unit set at roughly two-inch intervals through the rise, which means the tech can park a vehicle at whatever working height the job calls for rather than committing to fully up or fully down.

December Through February: Seasonal Storage Season

The first real test was storage season. Central Iowa shops that take in seasonal vehicles — convertibles, classic cars, motorcycles on trailers, the occasional boat trailer — spend December doing a lot of repetitive short-duration service. Oil change, fuel stabilizer, tire pressure, battery tender, undercarriage look-over for rodent damage. It is not glamorous work but it is volume work, and volume work is exactly where lift cycle time shows up in your day.

What they found is that a scissor lift for automotive storage prep is faster than they expected for one specific reason: drive-on. There is no time spent positioning arms under pinch welds and adjusting pad heights on each vehicle. The car drives on, the pads contact along the rockers, up it goes. On a run of fifteen vehicles in a day that saves real minutes per unit. The tradeoff appeared on a couple of low-clearance cars — a lowered coupe needed ramps to clear the platform edge, and one vintage car with a soft frame required careful pad placement to avoid loading a spot that would not take it. Those are known limitations, not defects. The shop kept a set of low-profile approach ramps and a pad reference chart on the wall by the control station, and the problem stopped being a problem. They also learned to leave the lift fully down overnight in the coldest weeks, since hydraulic fluid thickens and a cold first cycle in an unheated bay is noticeably slower.

Spring: The First Real Service Call

Around month seven we got a call about slow descent on one side. That is one of the more common complaints on any hydraulic lift and it has a short list of causes: air in the system, a partially fouled flow control, a lock not fully releasing, or a cylinder seal starting to weep. We started with the cheapest possibility and it turned out to be exactly that — air introduced during a fluid top-off that had not been fully bled. Twenty minutes of cycling with the bleed procedure and the platforms were level again through the whole travel.

We used the visit to do the ninety-day items they had skipped: fluid level and condition, hose inspection at every flex point, lock pawl engagement check, anchor torque verification, and a look at the pivot pins and bushings for wear. On a scissor design, those pivot points carry everything, and they are also the parts people never look at until something binds. We also cleaned the underside of the platform, which in an RV and trailer shop collects a remarkable amount of road salt and grit over an Iowa winter. Corrosion is the quiet killer on any lift in this climate. What They Would Do Differently

Asked at the one-year mark what they would change, the owner named two things. First, he would have specified a longer platform. The unit handles their crew-cab trucks, but barely, and a couple of extra feet of runway would have made the tow-rig jobs less fussy. Platform length is cheap to add at order time and impossible to add later. Second, he would have run a compressed air drop and a power outlet to the lift station at install rather than adding them six months in. Small thing, but you feel it every day.

What he would not change is the basic choice. A scissor lift for automotive and light-truck service was right for a building where floor space is the scarce resource. The absence of columns means the bay converts back to open floor in ten seconds, which matters more in a mixed RV-and-auto shop than it would in a dedicated car shop. He also noted that his techs adapted faster than expected — drive-on is intuitive in a way that arm positioning on a two-post is not, and a seasonal helper can be trained on it in an afternoon. That mattered during storage intake when they were running extra hands. The honest caveat: if their work mix shifts further toward brake and wheel jobs where you want the underbody completely clear, they will end up adding a two-post rather than replacing this one. Which is fine. Most shops that grow end up with both.

How to Decide for Your Own Central Iowa Shop

If you are weighing a scissor lift for automotive work against the alternatives, the questions we ask are short. How wide is your usable bay, and does a column-free footprint buy you something? How tall is the vehicle mix, and do you have the ceiling for a two-post if you went that way? What is the slab thickness and age? What does your panel have available, and is there a dedicated circuit or does one need to be run? And critically: how much of your work requires access to the rockers and the areas the platform covers?

That last question decides it more often than price does. A scissor is excellent for engine and transmission access, exhaust, driveline, fluid service, and general inspection. It is compromised for anything requiring the rocker area or full four-wheel-off work without additional support. Be honest about your job mix, not the job mix you imagine having.
