A scissor lift for automotive use is one of the most misunderstood pieces of equipment we quote, and nowhere does that show up more clearly than in a collector’s garage. Last spring we set one up for a gentleman in northeast Iowa who keeps six vehicles under one roof — two of them driven, four of them stored and started once a month. He didn’t want columns eating into his floor plan, he didn’t want to drop a post next to a car he’d spent two winters painting, and he did want something he could roll out of the way when the garage turned into a woodshop in December. Twelve months later, we went back for his first annual inspection. Here’s what that first year actually looked like, spec sheet through first service call.

Why He Ruled Out Posts Before He Called Us

The first conversation was about geometry, not brands. His building is a deep three-bay with extra width — the kind of shop where you assume space isn’t the constraint. But space wasn’t really the issue. Access was. When four of six vehicles are parked bumper-to-bumper for six months of the year, a pair of fixed columns in the middle bay means you’re planning your whole floor around the lift instead of the other way around. He’d already priced a two-post through a big-box catalog and walked away from it, not on cost but on permanence.

We talked him through the honest tradeoff. A two-post is still the better tool if your main job is wheels-off brake and suspension work all day long — nothing beats open access under a car hanging from its frame. But for a collector who mostly needs oil changes, undercarriage inspection, exhaust work and seasonal tire swaps, a scissor lift for automotive service gets you 80 percent of the capability with none of the footprint commitment. That’s the sentence that ended the debate. We shipped a full-rise model rated well above his heaviest car, which in his case was a mid-70s land yacht sitting a little over 4,500 pounds curb weight. Capacity headroom mattered to him more than it needed to, but we never argue with a customer who wants margin.

Spec Comparison: What We Actually Compared on Paper

Before anything shipped, we built him a three-column comparison, because model numbers in this category are genuinely confusing. The variables that matter are lifting capacity, maximum rise height, collapsed height, runway length, drive-over ramp angle, and whether the power unit is 110V or 220V. Everything else is noise. He was choosing between a mid-rise unit topping out around 48 inches and two full-rise units in the 68- to 72-inch range.

Collapsed height is the spec people skip and then regret. A surface-mount full-rise sits somewhere between four and eight inches off the floor depending on the model, and if your lowest car has three inches of ground clearance at the rocker, that number decides whether you’re driving on or jacking on. His two lowest vehicles ended up needing the shorter approach ramps, which we swapped before delivery. Runway length was the second sticking point — a long-wheelbase car on a short-runway scissor lift for automotive work leaves you hanging tires off the end, which is fine for a tire rotation and not fine for anything requiring you to be under the car. We landed on the longest runway option in the line, gave up about two inches of maximum rise in the process, and he has never once complained about the ceiling. His pole building has twelve-foot walls, so rise height was never the binding constraint.

Installation Day in a Twelve-Foot Pole Building

Install went about like most surface-mount jobs: half a day, two techs, and the concrete did most of the talking. We core-tested his slab before we drove a single anchor. His building had a poured floor at roughly five inches with decent aggregate, which is comfortable for this class of equipment — we generally want a minimum of four inches at 3,000 PSI, cured, with no cracks running through the anchor zone. If a slab doesn’t test out, we’d rather tell you on day one than come back for a warranty claim on a torn-out anchor bolt in year three.

The other install-day conversation was power. He had a single 110V circuit in that bay and a subpanel forty feet away. Running 220V would have given him a faster cycle time, but the 110V unit was already spec’d and he wasn’t in a hurry to pull wire, so we set it up on the existing circuit with a dedicated breaker. Cycle time up is about 45 to 55 seconds on that model — slow enough to notice, not slow enough to matter for a man who’s doing one car a weekend. We also spent twenty minutes on the lock mechanism, which surprises nearly everyone. It’s not all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down. There are mechanical lock positions every couple of inches through the travel, so you set the height to whatever’s comfortable for the job. He set his first tire rotation at chest height and never went higher.

First Tire Rotation: Where the Configuration Earned Its Keep

Tire and wheel work is the single most common job in a collector’s garage, and it’s also where a scissor lift for automotive use has a real quirk you need to plan around. On a standard full-rise scissor, the runways sit under the tires. That’s great for exhaust, brake lines, oil and inspection — and useless for pulling wheels, because the wheels are what’s holding the car up.

There are two answers. The first is a rolling bridge jack, the same accessory people put on four-post lifts, which lifts the car off the runways by its frame or pinch welds and frees all four corners. The second is to buy a mid-rise or frame-engaging model where the pads contact the chassis directly and the wheels hang free from the start. We went with a pair of jacks for him because he wanted the runway capability for storage. His first winter tire swap took him about 35 minutes for all four corners — slower than a shop with a two-post and an impact gun, faster than crawling around with a floor jack and jack stands, and infinitely safer. If we’d known on day one that tire rotation was 70 percent of his workload, we might have steered him toward a frame-engaging scissor lift for automotive service instead. He’d still have chosen the runways for the storage angle, but he’d have chosen them knowing the tradeoff. That’s the whole point of the conversation.

Storing One Car Over Another: What a Scissor Can and Can’t Do

This is the request we get most often from collectors and the one where we push back hardest. Long-term vehicle stacking is a four-post job. A four-post carries the vehicle on its wheels with mechanical locks and no hydraulic pressure held indefinitely, and it’s designed to sit loaded for months. A scissor lift for automotive work can absolutely hold a car up for a weekend project, and higher-end models have solid mechanical locks — but leaving a vehicle parked at full rise for five months is not what the engineering was drawn for, and it’s not what the manufacturer’s manual permits.

Our northeast Iowa customer had originally asked about parking one car above another. We sent him a four-post quote alongside the scissor quote and let him decide. He went with the scissor and a simple change of plan: the six-car rotation happens on the floor, and the lift is a work platform, not a parking deck. A year in, that’s been the right call for him. A twelve-foot sidewall handles most stacking scenarios. A ten-foot sidewall with a truck on top does not.

The First Service Call: Cylinder Seep and a Loose Lock Pawl

At the eleven-month mark he called about a small puddle. Nothing dramatic — a film of fluid on the floor under the driver’s-side cylinder, maybe a tablespoon over three weeks. That’s the most common first-year issue we see on this category, and nine times out of ten it’s a rod seal, not a failed cylinder. We rebuilt it on site in under two hours with a seal kit off our shelf. Total cost was a fraction of a replacement cylinder, and the lift was back in service the same afternoon.

We also found a lock pawl that wasn’t seating cleanly on one side, which is a five-minute adjustment and a genuine safety item. Uneven lock engagement is how a loaded lift ends up sitting crooked, and it’s exactly the kind of thing an annual inspection catches before it becomes a story. Our standing advice to every scissor owner: check your fluid level monthly, wipe the cylinder rods, listen for both locks clicking on the way up, and grease the pivot pins twice a year. Do that and this equipment will outlast the cars on it. Skip it and you’ll be pricing a cylinder rebuild instead of a seal kit. What We’d Tell the Next Northeast Iowa Collector

Twelve months of data from one garage isn’t a study, but the lessons repeat across every install we do. Start with your lowest car and your heaviest car, not with a budget number. Collapsed height decides whether you can drive onto it. Capacity decides whether you’re comfortable under it. Runway length decides whether you can work under the whole vehicle or just the middle of it. Everything else — finish, brand badge, whether the power unit sits on the left or the right — is preference.

The second lesson is about honesty on the front end. We could have sold this customer a bigger unit, a stacking setup he’d have outgrown, or a bargain import we don’t stock parts for. Instead we sold him a mid-tier scissor lift for automotive service that fit his slab, his power, and his actual weekend habits, plus the jacks he needed for wheel work. When something seeped at month eleven, we had the seal kit and we were an hour and a half up the highway. That’s the part a spec sheet never shows you.
