This is the layout most northeast Iowa shops inherited from a previous owner or built ten-plus years ago: one bay, one 2-post lift, bolted down and permanent. It works fine as long as every vehicle that comes through is roughly the same size and the bay was sized correctly from day one. The problem shows up the moment a bigger fleet truck, a lifted pickup, or a service van needs that bay and the arms won’t reach the pinch points, or the vehicle is simply too long for the drive-through clearance.

A scissor lift / portable setup lifts the vehicle from underneath at the frame or pinch points, leaving the wheels hanging free and full access to the exhaust system, driveshaft, and differential — which is exactly what driveline techs need. When the job’s done, the units roll out of the way and the bay goes back to general use, drive-through space, or storage.

For exhaust and driveline work specifically, this matters because you’re not always lifting the whole vehicle sky-high — sometimes you need it at chest height for twenty minutes to swap a cat-back system, and a scissor lift / portable pair gets you there faster than driving onto a 2-post and running the arms out. Bay Layout: What Actually Changes on the Shop Floor

Quality portable scissor lifts lock in stages — roughly every two to two-and-a-half inches — so a tech working on a low sedan’s exhaust doesn’t need the vehicle raised to the same height as a full-size van’s differential. That range of lock positions is what makes a scissor lift / portable setup genuinely useful across a mixed bay, rather than just an all-the-way-up-or-down tool.

For driveline work specifically, having a mid-height lock matters because techs are often working seated or kneeling directly under the differential, not standing. Being able to dial in the exact working height — rather than settling for whatever the top stop gives you — cuts down on fatigue over a full shift and reduces the awkward reach-and-twist motions that cause repeat strain injuries in exhaust and driveline bays.

Portable Storage and Floor Space When Not in Use

A fixed lift owns its floor space permanently, whether it’s in use or not. A scissor lift / portable unit doesn’t have to. Most models we install for northeast Iowa shops are designed to roll to a wall or a corner bay and sit flush against it when not needed, freeing that square footage for parts staging, a second vehicle, or simply better traffic flow through the shop.
