Annual state inspections move a lot of vehicles through a shop in a short window, and the job itself doesn’t need the full lift height of a two-post rack. Techs need to see the underbody, check suspension components, look at the exhaust, and get eyes on brake lines — all work that’s comfortable at a mid-range working height rather than maximum lift. A scissor lift / portable is built exactly for that kind of job.

The other advantage for a shop owner is flexibility. A scissor lift / portable can be moved between bays as inspection volume shifts through the year, or pushed aside during slower months so the bay can handle other work. The Site Survey: What We Actually Check Before Install Day

Before we schedule installation, we walk the bay in person or review detailed photos and measurements if the shop is farther out. We’re checking slab thickness and condition, because even a portable unit puts significant point-loading on the concrete when it’s raised with a vehicle on it. Cracked, spalling, or unusually thin concrete is a dealbreaker until it’s addressed — a scissor lift / portable is lighter on the floor than a bolted two-post, but it’s not exempt from concrete requirements.

We also measure ceiling height, door clearance if the unit needs to roll in through a service door, and the exact footprint of the bay including swing room for open car doors and tech movement around the platform. Electrical is next: most scissor-style lifts need a dedicated circuit for the hydraulic power unit, and we confirm voltage, amperage, and outlet location relative to where the lift will actually sit day to day, not just where it’s convenient to install.

Power, Air, and Utility Placement

Getting utilities right during prep saves a shop from an ugly retrofit later. We map out where the power unit will sit, how far the hydraulic hose or cable runs need to travel, and whether the shop’s existing panel has capacity or needs an electrician involved before install day. For a scissor lift / portable that will be repositioned occasionally, we also plan for a longer cord or a nearby secondary outlet so the unit isn’t tethered to one exact spot.

Air supply matters too if the shop plans to run pneumatic tools or turntables alongside the lift. We check existing air line routing and pressure at the bay to make sure the inspection station has everything a tech needs within reach, because a lift that’s perfectly placed but starved of air or power at the point of use just creates a workaround that techs will resent within a month.

Floor Load, Anchoring, and Rollaway Considerations

Even though a scissor lift / portable is designed to move, most shops still want it anchored or at least chocked securely at its primary working location, especially in a high-traffic inspection bay. We check the slab for anchor placement options and make sure there’s no rebar, conduit, or in-floor heating line in the way before anyone drills.

We also talk through rollaway risk with the shop owner directly. A unit that’s frequently repositioned needs locking casters that actually hold under load, and staff need a habit of engaging those locks every single time, not just when they remember. Training Techs on Safe Operation Before Day One

Installation prep isn’t finished when the unit is bolted or wheeled into place. Most units lock in small height increments, which lets techs choose exactly the working height they want instead of forcing an all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down decision — but only if they know how to use the lock properly.

Timing the Install Around Your Busy Season
