Plans change, and a lift bought for today’s truck often ends up holding a bigger one next year.
Capacity on paper and capacity in practice aren’t always the same thing either. Some sellers rate semi lifts at their theoretical maximum under ideal conditions, not real-world use with uneven weight distribution from a stripped-down driveline or a truck missing its bed. When you’re comparing units, look for a published capacity with a comfortable margin above your actual weight — we tell people to aim for at least 20 percent headroom. Cylinder Condition Tells You the Real Story
Used semi lifts live or die by their hydraulic cylinders. Before you buy anything secondhand, ask to see the cylinders extended and holding weight, not just cycling empty. Weeping seals, pitted rods, or uneven extension between two posts on a four-post setup are all signs the unit needs a rebuild before it’s trustworthy. A worn seal might hold air pressure in a shop demo and still fail slowly over a weekend once it’s actually loaded and left standing.
This is where knowing your rebuild kit options in advance pays off. Seal kits for most common heavy-duty cylinders are readily available, and a full rebuild is a lot cheaper than a new cylinder assembly. If a seller can’t tell you the cylinder bore size or won’t let you inspect the rod surface for scoring, that’s a red flag worth walking away from. Four-post and in-ground configurations spread load differently, and each has its own minimum slab requirements that manufacturers publish for a reason.
We’ve had hobbyists in eastern Iowa assume their detached garage slab was fine because it held a truck before — but holding a truck’s rolling weight and holding a lift’s concentrated anchor points under a raised, loaded vehicle are two different engineering problems. If your slab doesn’t meet spec, you’re looking at either cutting and pouring a new pad or choosing a lift style with a lower footprint requirement. Get this figured out before you buy, not after delivery, because return shipping on heavy equipment is expensive and slow.
Runway Length and Rise Height for Driveline Work
Exhaust and driveline access is the whole point of this purchase, so measure for it specifically. You need enough rise height to stand comfortably under the frame rails, and you need clear runway length so the truck’s full wheelbase sits supported without overhanging the platform. Semi tractors and long-frame trucks are unforgiving here — a lift sized for a pickup won’t have the runway length a tractor needs.
Ceiling height matters just as much as floor space. Add the lift’s maximum rise to your vehicle’s height and compare that to your garage door and ceiling clearance before ordering. We’ve seen hobbyists order a unit that technically fit the concrete footprint but couldn’t rise high enough to clear the ceiling once a truck was loaded on it. Measure twice, because reconfiguring a shop after installation costs real time and money you didn’t plan for.
Safety-Rated Locks and Load Holding
Working alone under a raised vehicle means you need mechanical locks you actually trust, not just hydraulic pressure holding the load. Look for units with positive mechanical locking at multiple height increments, engaged automatically as the platform rises. This is non-negotiable for driveline work where you’re spending long stretches directly under the vehicle.
Ask any seller of used semi lifts to demonstrate the lock engagement, not just describe it. A lock that sticks, doesn’t fully seat, or requires you to manually trip it every time is a liability in a one-person home shop where nobody else is around to notice a problem. We’d rather see a hobbyist spend a little more on a unit with reliable locks than save money on one that cuts corners on the exact feature that keeps you safe underneath it.
Installation and Leveling Aren’t a DIY Shortcut
We get calls from hobbyists who bought heavy-duty lifts secondhand and tried to set them up themselves, only to find the posts weren’t level, the hydraulic lines weren’t properly bled, or the anchors weren’t torqued to spec. Semi lifts carry enough weight that a poor installation isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a real safety issue once a loaded vehicle is sitting on it.

Before buying, confirm the brand and model still has an active parts pipeline.
