Why Restoration Shops Need a Different Class of Semi Lifts

A third-generation family shop doing frame-off restoration on a grain truck or an old cab-over isn’t lifting the vehicle the same way a quick-lube shop lifts a pickup. Restoration work means the vehicle sits on the lift for days or weeks at a time while you cut, weld, and swap components — sometimes with the frame partially disassembled. That changes what you need from semi lifts entirely. You need adjustable arms that reach a stripped frame rail, lock pins rated for asymmetric loading, and a rise height that gets your welder standing upright instead of hunched under a differential.

Most true semi lifts in this category run 26,000 to 35,000 lb capacity, arranged as either a heavy two-post or a four-post platform/runway configuration. The two-post gives you full underside access, which restoration guys love, but it demands more from your slab — you’re looking at a minimum 6-inch reinforced concrete pad with rebar, sometimes more depending on soil conditions in older Cedar Rapids industrial buildings. Rise on these units typically tops out between 68 and 76 inches, which is enough to walk a 6-foot technician under the frame without ducking, but you need to measure your actual clear height, not your door height, because HVAC ductwork and sprinkler heads eat into that number fast.

If you’re running a four-post platform or runway-style lift instead, plan on 30 to 34 feet of usable runway length to accommodate a full tractor with sleeper cab, and width clearance of at least 14 feet between columns to keep mirrors and duals clear. Drive-through configurations are common in restoration bays because they let you roll the truck straight through without a three-point turn in a tight shop. We size every one of these installs to the actual vehicles you’re working on — a straight grain truck has completely different runway needs than a full sleeper tractor, and guessing wrong here is an expensive mistake to fix after the concrete’s poured.

Financing Terms and Payment Schedule for Heavy-Duty Equipment

Semi lifts in this capacity class aren’t cheap, and we don’t pretend otherwise. What we do offer is a payment structure that doesn’t require a shop to write one enormous check before a single anchor bolt goes into the floor. Our standard approach on larger installs is a deposit to lock your install date, a progress payment tied to equipment delivery, and a final payment due at completed, tested installation — not before. Two-Post Versus Platform: Which Fits a Cedar Rapids Restoration Bay

Concrete, Anchoring, and the Parts of the Install Nobody Talks About

The lift itself gets all the attention, but the floor underneath it is what actually holds a loaded semi truck 6 feet in the air. Heavy-duty semi lifts anchor into concrete with embedment depths that older Iowa shop floors frequently can’t meet without additional work. We test core samples on any install where the existing slab predates modern reinforcement standards, and in a meaningful number of Cedar Rapids jobs we’ve had to recommend a new pour for at least the footprint of the lift columns before installation proceeds.

This isn’t us trying to upsell concrete work — it’s a liability issue.
