The trade-off is installation complexity — you’re looking at excavation, a concrete pit, and drainage considerations that a mobile setup doesn’t require.

For northern Missouri specifically, frost depth and soil conditions matter more than most people expect. We always run a site survey before quoting an in-ground option because groundwater and clay soil common in that region can turn a straightforward install into a multi-week project if it isn’t scoped correctly. This configuration makes the most sense for fleets with one or two dedicated bays doing high volume, repetitive inspection and service work where the lift stays in one place permanently and the floor space savings actually get used.

The site survey for this configuration focuses more on floor flatness and load distribution across the slab rather than excavation depth, which for a lot of older Missouri shop buildings is a far more forgiving requirement to meet.

We measure ceiling height with the largest truck in your fleet in mind — cab raised, exhaust stack included if applicable. They lose slightly on setup time per vehicle, since columns have to be positioned and synced before each lift.

For a small fleet doing annual state inspections on a predictable schedule with the same handful of trucks, either configuration works, but the decision usually comes down to your building. If you’ve already got a dedicated heavy bay with good slab and drainage, piston lifts are the cleaner long-term investment. If your shop handles a mix of vehicle types or you’re not ready to commit to permanent excavation, mobile columns get you semi lifts capability without the construction project.

Sizing the Lift to Your Actual Fleet, Not the Average Truck

One mistake we catch often in the quoting process is fleets sizing capacity to their most common truck instead of their heaviest. If you run even one loaded tri-axle or a truck with a heavier permanent attachment, your semi lifts capacity rating needs to cover that vehicle, not just the average day-to-day rig. Undersizing capacity is the single most common reason we get called back out to a shop within the first year.
