A set of semi lifts rated for medium- and heavy-duty trucks doesn’t arrive as one crate. Depending on configuration, you’re looking at columns (two or four, sometimes six for longer wheelbase trucks), a hydraulic power unit, cabling or chain runways, control boxes, and a pallet of hardware, casters, and runway extensions. Column crates for a heavy-duty four-post or mobile column set can run 8 to 10 feet long and weigh 800 to 1,500 lbs each once crated — meaning a full set of four columns can easily exceed 4,000-5,000 lbs of freight before you even count the power unit and accessories.

That freight typically ships on a flatbed or step-deck trailer, not a standard box truck, because of the length and weight of individual crates. We tell every dealership service manager the same thing before delivery: know your dock situation before the truck shows up. A standard loading dock with a dock plate handles this fine if you have one, but a lot of independent shops and even some dealership service bays don’t have dock-height access — which means the freight has to come off at ground level, and that changes the equipment you need on site.

Forklift Capacity: The Detail Everyone Underestimates

This is where quotes get complicated. Some semi lifts are shipped with the expectation that the customer or the freight carrier supplies a forklift for unloading — and not just any forklift. A single heavy-duty column crate can weigh over half a ton, and you need forks long enough and a mast rated high enough to clear a step-deck trailer’s side rails. A standard 3,000 lb warehouse forklift is not adequate for unloading heavy-duty column freight; you typically need a 6,000 lb-plus capacity unit with extended forks.

A heavy-duty four-post or mobile column setup rated for 30,000 to 60,000+ lbs combined capacity often needs 14 to 16 feet of ceiling clearance to fully raise a tall truck cab or box body, plus room for the columns themselves, which run taller than typical two-post columns. Dealership service bays built decades ago for lighter-duty work sometimes don’t have that clearance, and that’s a conversation we have early — before freight ever gets scheduled — because retrofitting a bay’s ceiling height after the fact isn’t realistic.

Column spacing matters just as much. Semi lifts using mobile columns give you flexibility to space columns to match wheelbase, but you still need enough floor width between bay walls and equipment to maneuver a tractor or straight truck into position without clipping mirrors or door frames. We measure bay dimensions as part of every heavy-duty quote for exactly this reason — a lift that’s rated correctly on paper is useless if the truck can’t physically get positioned on it.

Restoration and Metal Work Loads Are Different Than Daily Service

A dealership doing restoration and metal work on trucks — frame straightening, undercarriage rust repair, axle and suspension rebuilds — puts different stress on a lift than routine oil changes and brake jobs. Weight distribution during metal work is often uneven, with a truck missing a cab or body section, or with heavy fabrication equipment mounted mid-repair. Semi lifts intended for this kind of work need adequate safety margin above the actual truck weight, not just enough capacity for a fully loaded vehicle.
