Semi truck lifts are one of the most expensive equipment decisions a heavy-duty shop will make, and the worst part is that most shops only get one shot at it before the concrete is poured and the bay is built around whatever they picked. We’ve walked into more than one central Iowa shop where the crew chief tells us the lift they bought two years ago is fighting them every single day — wrong reach, wrong capacity, wrong spot in the bay. If you’re staring down a CV axle and half-shaft job on a Class 8 truck and wondering what configuration actually fits your building, this is the decision tree we walk customers through before they spend a dollar.

Start With What You Actually Drive Onto the Rack

Every decision tree for semi truck lifts starts with the vehicle mix, not the catalog. A shop that only sees straight trucks and box vans has very different needs than one pulling in day-cab tractors with a fifth wheel, or a fleet running tandem-axle dumps. Wheelbase, axle spacing, and overall length all dictate how much runway you need in front of and behind the lift, and how far the columns or arms need to reach to find solid lift points without hitting the frame rails at an angle.

For CV axle and half-shaft work specifically, you want a setup that gets the truck high enough to work comfortably standing up, with clear access to the underside of the drivetrain without a crossmember or lift arm blocking your swing. Mobile column lifts shine here because you can set the columns exactly where the frame allows and walk the whole underside once it’s up, no fixed runway or approach ramp in your way. If your trucks vary wildly in wheelbase week to week, that flexibility alone can be worth more than a few thousand pounds of extra rated capacity you’ll rarely use.

Set Your Capacity Floor Before You Shop

Capacity is where shops either overspend out of fear or underspend and regret it within a year. Look at your heaviest truck fully loaded — not empty, not average — and build in headroom above that number. A tandem-axle truck with a loaded trailer can push well past what a single set of columns rated for lighter service can handle, and running equipment at its rated max every day is how you shorten its life and void your warranty.

We typically point heavy-duty shops toward mobile column sets in the 35,000 to 60,000 lb per-column range when trucks are being lifted in sets of four or six columns working together, since that’s the difference between comfortably servicing a loaded dump truck and white-knuckling it. If your shop mostly handles lighter medium-duty work with the occasional Class 8 truck mixed in, you don’t need to buy for the exception — buy for your daily average and rent or sub out the rare oversized job. That single decision saves most Iowa shops more money than any other line item in the purchase.

Two-Post, Four-Post, or Mobile Column — The Real Tradeoffs

This is where the decision tree branches hardest. Two-post configurations rated for heavy-duty work exist, but they’re less common on true semi truck lifts because of how much the arms need to extend to clear long wheelbases and dual rear axles — you need serious floor anchoring and a shop built specifically around that footprint. Four-post platforms are excellent for alignment and long-term storage since the truck drives on and sits on a stable deck, but they don’t give you the total underside access that CV axle and half-shaft work demands.

Mobile column lifts solve the access problem directly. Because there’s no fixed runway underneath, you get a completely open working area beneath the truck once it’s up, which matters when you’re pulling a half-shaft and need to maneuver a slide hammer or a floor jack for extra support. They also scale — start with four columns for straight trucks, add two more later for tandem-axle work — so your first purchase doesn’t lock you into your final configuration. For a shop still growing its heavy-duty side, that scalability is often the deciding factor over raw sticker price.

Lay Out the Bay Before You Order

We’ve seen shops buy the right lift and still end up frustrated because nobody measured the bay first. Semi truck lifts need runway length for the longest truck you service, clearance overhead for the truck at full lift height, and enough width on either side for a tech to walk around comfortably with tools. If your bay ceiling is tight, that changes your maximum practical lift height before you even look at capacity numbers.

Workflow inside the bay matters just as much as the lift itself. Where does the parts cart sit? Where does the tech stage the old half-shaft and CV joint while the new ones come off the shelf? A lift dropped in the dead center of a bay with no thought to workflow turns a two-hour CV axle job into a three-hour job just from extra walking and repositioning. We always recommend sketching the bay with the lift, tool cart, and staging area marked out before the concrete work or electrical runs happen, because moving power drops after installation costs real money.

Power, Air, and Anchoring Requirements

Mobile column semi truck lifts need reliable power at each column location, and depending on the model, either battery packs or a wired connection. Plan your electrical layout around where the columns will actually sit during service, not just near a wall outlet that happens to be convenient. Anchored two-post and four-post configurations need engineered concrete — thickness and rebar matter, and skipping a proper slab inspection is the single most common reason a heavy-duty lift fails inspection or, worse, fails in service.

Air requirements are easy to overlook until installation day. Many heavy-duty lift systems use pneumatic release or synchronization features that need a dedicated air line sized correctly, not just whatever compressor happens to be running the impact guns. Get your electrician and your lift installer talking to each other before either one shows up on site — coordinating that ahead of time is the difference between a one-day install and a week of change orders.

Budget Tiers and What You Actually Get

On the low end, a single set of mobile columns rated for lighter medium-duty trucks gets an owner-operator or small shop into safe lift work without a huge capital outlay. Mid-range budgets open up higher per-column capacity and additional columns for tandem work, which is where most growing Iowa fleets land. At the top end, full six or eight-column wireless systems with synchronized lifting give you the capacity and flexibility to service anything from a straight truck to a fully loaded semi-tractor with a trailer still attached.

The mistake we see most is a shop buying at the bottom of their budget range and then discovering six months later that their real capacity needs sat one tier higher the whole time. Before you set your number, walk your yard and write down the actual GVWR of every truck you expect to lift in the next three years, not just what’s parked there today. That list — not the sales quote — should set your budget floor.

Making the Final Call

By the time you’ve worked through vehicle mix, capacity floor, configuration type, bay layout, power requirements, and budget tier, the right choice for semi truck lifts is usually obvious rather than a gut call. The shops that struggle are almost always the ones that skipped a step — bought on price without checking capacity, or bought capacity without checking bay clearance. Slow down on the front end and the equipment will serve you well for a decade or more.
