A collector building a new garage in eastern Nebraska came to us last year with a familiar goal: he wanted to store two vehicles in the same footprint and still be able to work underneath one of them, which meant the shop auto lift had to be chosen before the concrete even got poured. Passenger vehicles under 7,000 lbs, one parked on the lift and one potentially parked beneath it — a setup we’ve built for plenty of collectors with pole buildings and 12-foot side walls. Here’s how that first year actually played out, from the planning calls to the first suspension job on the lift.

Planning the Garage Around the Lift, Not the Other Way Around

Most people design a garage first and try to fit a lift into whatever space is left. This collector did it right: before the building was framed, he sent us the dimensions of a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot side walls and asked what shop auto lift options would actually fit and do double duty as storage. That order of operations matters enormously. Ceiling height determines whether a two-post lift can fully raise a vehicle for storage above a parked car below, and side wall height is often the limiting factor in pole buildings, not the roof peak.

We asked him the two questions that matter most before recommending anything: what’s the heaviest vehicle he’d ever put on it, and does he want to work underneath the stored car or just park it up out of the way. His answer — light passenger vehicles, occasional service work underneath — pointed us toward a specific class of two-post lift rather than a simple storage-only pad, and that decision got locked in months before the slab was poured.

Choosing the Configuration: Storage Capacity Meets Service Access

With a 12-foot side wall, a standard two-post asymmetric lift rated for 7,000 to 9,000 lbs was the right fit. It gave him enough lift height to park a second vehicle underneath comfortably while leaving room to walk around and work on the car up top if needed. We steered him away from a taller commercial-grade two-post that would have maxed out clearance with almost nothing to spare, since a couple inches of margin matters once you’re rolling a floor jack or a tall toolbox cart underneath.

We also talked through anchoring requirements for his slab. A fresh pour done to spec for a shop auto lift is straightforward, but it has to be planned before the concrete goes in — rebar placement and slab thickness under the post locations need to meet the lift manufacturer’s anchoring spec, and it’s far cheaper to build that in from the start than to retrofit later.

Install Day: What Actually Happened in the New Garage

By the time we arrived for install, the building was finished and the slab had cured well past the minimum window. Install on a clean, code-built pole barn floor is usually a one-day job for a two-post lift, and this one went that way — anchoring the posts, running the hydraulic lines, calibrating the arms, and testing the lift empty before ever rolling a vehicle onto it. We walked him through the safety locks and the release mechanism in person rather than just handing him a manual, since that’s the step people skip when they buy online and self-install.

He mentioned afterward that seeing the lift actually installed and cycled a few times gave him more confidence than any spec sheet had. That’s typical — collectors who’ve never owned a shop auto lift before usually spend the first week just running it up and down empty a few times before trusting it with a car they care about.

Sequencing the Rest of the Build-Out

The lift install was step one, but the rest of his garage build-out happened in a specific order that we’d recommend to any collector doing the same thing. Electrical for the lift’s hydraulic unit went in before insulation and drywall, since running conduit after the walls are finished is a headache nobody wants. Lighting placement came next, positioned specifically so there’d be no shadow under a raised vehicle — a small detail that matters a lot once you’re doing suspension work at 10pm on a weeknight.

Storage cabinets and a workbench went in last, positioned well clear of the lift’s swing radius. We see collectors make the mistake of building shelving first and then discovering the lift arms don’t clear a cabinet corner. Planning cabinet and bench placement after the lift is installed, using the actual swing radius rather than a guess, avoided that problem entirely here.

The First Real Job: Suspension and Shocks a Year Later

About a year after install, the collector called us with a suspension and shock replacement job on one of his stored vehicles — the first real service work the lift had seen beyond casual storage duty. This is where the asymmetric arm configuration paid off: full wheel-off access on all four corners, with the vehicle raised comfortably to chest height so shocks and control arms could be swapped without crouching under a car on jack stands.

He did the job himself, calling us mid-project only to double check torque specs weren’t lift-related. That’s the outcome we aim for with every collector build: a lift that stayed out of the way for a year of quiet storage duty and then performed exactly as needed the moment real service work came up. A shop auto lift that only gets used once in a while still needs to work flawlessly on that occasion, and this one did.

Maintenance Between Storage Stretches

Collector garages present a maintenance wrinkle that daily-use shops don’t deal with as much: long stretches of the lift sitting loaded with a stored vehicle and not cycling at all. Hydraulic seals and cables can be affected by extended static loading, so we recommend collectors cycle the lift empty every month or two even during long storage periods, and check hydraulic fluid levels twice a year rather than waiting for an annual service call.

We also recommend a visual inspection of the arm locks and safety latches before every use, which takes under a minute but catches the rare issue before it becomes a real problem. For a collector’s shop auto lift that might sit loaded for months between service jobs, this simple habit matters more than it would in a shop lifting cars daily, where wear patterns get noticed naturally through frequent use.

What We’d Tell Any Collector Planning the Same Build

If you’re an eastern Nebraska or Iowa collector planning a similar garage, the single best move is contacting an installer before the concrete gets poured, not after. Slab specs, ceiling clearance, and electrical rough-in are all far cheaper to get right the first time than to retrofit into a finished building. The second thing we’d tell you: don’t undersize for the sake of saving a little on the sticker price. A slightly higher capacity lift, rated with margin above your heaviest vehicle, costs a modest amount more up front and gives you flexibility if your collection changes over the years.
