We’ve walked plenty of owners through this exact sequence — a rural shop outside Waterloo, a fleet bay near Independence, a farm-adjacent garage getting built for heavy pickups and the occasional dragster hauler. The lift you choose drives your ceiling height, your slab thickness, your bay spacing, and your electrical rough-in. Get the order wrong and you’re either cutting concrete later or living with a lift that can’t clear your tallest truck. Here’s how the cost and sequencing actually breaks down.

Step One: Sizing the Shop Truck Lift to Your Actual Fleet

Before anyone talks price, we ask what actually rolls through the bay doors. A shop running 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups with job boxes, toolboxes, and trailer hitches loaded down needs more capacity than the sticker weight suggests. We’ve had owners tell us a 10,000-lb lift would be plenty for a pickup truck, and it usually is — until you add a service body, a full tool package, or a snowplow mount up front. If your fleet includes anything heavier, or you’re servicing dragsters and race trucks on trailers, a 12,000-lb or higher two-post model earns its keep fast.

The jump in price from a 10,000-lb lift to a 12,000-lb lift is real, but so is the cost of buying twice. We’d rather size it once. For a general-maintenance shop truck lift handling daily oil changes, brake jobs, and undercarriage work on pickups, a 10,000-lb two-post unit with a low base and open front covers most northeast Iowa shops. If your bay sees anything approaching a one-ton dually or a loaded flatbed, plan for 12,000-lb capacity from day one — it changes your anchor bolt pattern and your concrete spec, so this decision has to happen at the build-out stage, not after the slab cures.

Ceiling Height and Concrete: The Two Things You Can’t Fix Later

We’ve had calls from shops with 15-foot ceilings and 6 inches of concrete who thought that was overbuilt — it’s actually close to the sweet spot for a two-post lift servicing full-size trucks. You need enough overhead clearance to run the vehicle up and still stand under it without crouching, which usually means a minimum of 12 feet of clear ceiling height for a standard-rise two-post, more if you’re running a taller extension or a truck with a lift kit and oversized tires.

Concrete is the part people skip and regret. A shop truck lift anchors into the slab, and that slab needs to be rated for the dynamic load of a truck rising and dropping repeatedly, not just parked weight. We generally recommend a minimum of 4-6 inches of properly cured concrete with adequate rebar or mesh reinforcement, and we always check the engineering spec against the specific lift model before anchors go in. Skimping here to save money on the pour is the single most expensive mistake we see in new shop builds — redoing a slab after a lift is already ordered costs far more than doing it right the first time.

Budgeting the Full Install, Not Just the Lift Itself

The lift price tag is only part of the number. A full shop truck lift installation includes freight to your site, electrical rough-in if you’re running an air/electric combo unit, concrete inspection or coring if you’re retrofitting an existing slab, and professional installation and calibration. We quote all of this together so there are no surprise line items once the crew shows up.

For a northeast Iowa build-out, we typically see owners budgeting in three chunks: the lift and freight, the concrete and electrical prep (often handled by your general contractor before we arrive), and our install labor. If your build timeline has a gap — say your budget finalizes in December but the job can’t start until spring — that’s actually the ideal window to lock in pricing and get on our install calendar before the spring rush hits every lift installer in the state.

Single Lift vs. Multi-Bay: Volume Pricing Changes the Math

If you’re outfitting one bay, you pay per-unit pricing on the lift and a standard install fee. But we regularly quote multi-bay jobs — two, three, sometimes five lifts across multiple shop locations for a single fleet operation — and the per-unit cost drops noticeably when you order in volume. We’ve quoted jobs where a pair of 12,000-lb two-post lifts came in at a meaningfully lower per-lift rate than a single unit, simply because freight and install crew time get spread across more lifts in one trip.

If your garage build-out includes room to grow — maybe you’re only equipping two bays now but have four bays framed for future lifts — it’s worth discussing phased pricing with us up front. Choosing Between a Two-Post and a Scissor Lift for Truck Work

Not every shop truck lift job calls for a two-post. If your bay is doing fast in-and-out service work — oil changes, tire rotations, quick inspections — a scissor lift can move vehicles through faster because there’s no arm swing-out to align and no columns to work around. We install both configurations regularly, and multi-bay fleet shops often mix the two: two-post lifts for full-access brake and suspension work, scissor lifts for quick-turn maintenance bays.

The tradeoff is capacity and reach. Scissor lifts generally top out lower than heavy-duty two-post units, and undercarriage access can be more limited depending on the model. For a shop truck lift handling everything from oil changes to full suspension teardowns on heavy pickups, we still lean toward two-post as the primary lift, with scissor lifts as a secondary station if your bay count and budget support it.

Electrical, Air Lines, and the Rough-In Contractors Forget

Every lift needs power, and most need compressed air for the locking mechanism. This sounds obvious until you’re standing in a framed shop with no outlet within 20 feet of where the lift columns are going. We always send a site spec to your electrician before framing closes in, covering voltage, amperage, and the exact drop location relative to the lift footprint.

Compressed air is the other piece people underbudget. If your shop truck lift uses air-assisted locks, you need a dedicated line sized correctly, not just a shared drop off your main compressor that’s also running impact wrenches and sanders on the other side of the shop. Building this into your rough-in plan before drywall or interior finishing saves you from surface-mounted conduit and exposed air lines running across your new shop — a fix nobody wants to make after the fact.

Scheduling the Install Around Your Iowa Build Timeline

Northeast Iowa construction schedules get tight in spring and fall, and lift installers book up the same way general contractors do. If your concrete pour and framing are on a set timeline, we want to know your target install date as early as possible so we can hold a slot. We’ve had owners lock in a shop truck lift order months before their slab even goes in, specifically to guarantee install crew availability once the building is ready.

Winter installs are common in Iowa once a shop shell is enclosed and heated — concrete curing and electrical work can happen through the colder months as long as the building is closed in.
