How an ALI Gold Certified Single Car Lift Install Went Down for an Urbandale Restoration Build

An off-road builder in Urbandale reached out to us this spring with a restoration project that needed more than a jack and stands — full frame access, room to weld underneath, and a single car lift rated to hold heavy modified trucks safely at height for hours at a time, not minutes. Metal work on a lifted or armored off-road build puts different demands on a lift than routine oil changes ever will, and Auto Lift Services has done enough of these installs across Iowa to know that ALI Gold certification isn’t a marketing sticker — it’s the difference between a lift you trust with a welder running underneath it and one you don’t.

The Urbandale Build: What the Project Needed

The customer was restoring an off-road truck with plans for suspension fabrication, skid plate mounting, and rocker panel replacement — work that meant hours of the vehicle sitting elevated with a person underneath running a grinder or a MIG welder. That’s a fundamentally different load profile than a quick brake job. The lift needed to hold steady under uneven weight distribution as body panels came off, tolerate vibration from cutting and grinding, and do it consistently over what would likely be a multi-month build, not a one-time service visit.

Their garage had a 12-foot ceiling and a single bay dedicated entirely to the build, which gave us room to spec a 2-post configuration without the tight clearance compromises we sometimes have to make in smaller Iowa garages. The customer specifically asked about certification because they’d heard horror stories about uncertified lifts failing under sustained load — exactly the scenario a long-term metal fabrication project creates.

Why ALI Gold Certification Mattered Here

ALI Gold certification means the lift has been third-party tested against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard for design, construction, and performance — it’s not the manufacturer grading its own homework. For a single car lift that’s going to spend months holding a vehicle at height while someone works underneath with power tools, that independent verification is what let us tell this customer, with a straight face, that the equipment was built for exactly this kind of sustained-load, high-vibration use.

We stock and install Rotary and Challenger units specifically because they carry this certification across their commercial lines, and for a build like this Urbandale project we don’t recommend anything without it. Off-road and restoration work isn’t routine maintenance — it’s hours of unpredictable load as panels, axles, and drivetrain components come on and off the vehicle, sometimes with the frame itself partially disassembled. A certified single car lift gives you documented margin for that kind of use, not just a rated capacity number on a spec sheet.

Sizing the Lift for Frame-Off Style Work

We sized this install at a capacity well above the truck’s stock curb weight, because restoration and off-road builds routinely add weight — armor, winches, larger tires and wheels, aftermarket bumpers — and because frame work sometimes means the vehicle’s weight distribution shifts dramatically from side to side as components are removed. A single car lift rated tight to a vehicle’s as-built weight doesn’t leave room for that kind of project.

We also confirmed arm reach and pad placement worked with the truck’s aftermarket frame and rock sliders, since off-road builds often have body and frame modifications that don’t match stock lift point diagrams. Getting pad placement wrong on a modified frame is a common mistake we catch during install walkthroughs, and it’s especially important on a build where the frame itself may be getting cut, boxed, or reinforced.

Bay Layout for Fabrication Work

Because this bay was dedicated to one long-term build rather than daily service turnover, we positioned the lift with generous clearance on all sides for welding cart access, a cutting torch setup, and enough open floor for sheet metal and panel storage during the build. That’s a different layout priority than a quick-turnaround shop bay, where speed of getting vehicles in and out matters more than clearance for fabrication equipment.

We also talked through electrical and ventilation needs with the customer, since sustained welding and grinding in an enclosed garage bay raises considerations that a typical oil-change bay doesn’t have to deal with. None of that is part of the lift install itself, but it’s the kind of practical conversation we have with every off-road builder because the lift doesn’t operate in isolation from the rest of the shop.

What Certification Doesn’t Cover — And What Still Matters

ALI Gold certification tells you the lift design and construction meet a rigorous standard, but it doesn’t replace correct installation. We’ve seen certified lifts installed poorly — undersized anchors, wrong bolt torque, uneven concrete — that undermine the very safety margin the certification is supposed to guarantee. For this Urbandale install, we ran full anchor pull tests on the slab before final sign-off, because a restoration project with a person underneath the vehicle for hours at a time is not where you want to discover a marginal anchor.

We also walked the customer through annual inspection intervals, since a single car lift under sustained fabrication use should get checked more proactively than one used for occasional oil changes. Certification sets the bar for the equipment; ongoing inspection is what keeps it at that bar over years of heavy project use.

Why This Matters for Other Off-Road and Restoration Builders

If you’re planning a similar build anywhere in Iowa — frame work, armor fabrication, long-term restoration — the lesson from this Urbandale install is straightforward: don’t shortcut certification to save money on a single car lift you’re going to trust for months of fabrication work. The capacity number on the box matters less than whether that capacity has been independently verified for the kind of sustained, uneven, high-vibration load your project will actually put on it.

We walk every off-road and restoration customer through the same questions we asked in Urbandale — projected added weight, frame modifications, how long the vehicle will realistically sit at height, and what tools will be running underneath it. Those answers are what determine the right certified lift for your build, not just the sticker price.
