Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical: Know What You’re Actually Asking For

This is the single most common question we field from new buyers, and it’s not a dumb one. On a symmetrical car lift, the arms extend evenly on both sides of the columns, and the vehicle sits centered between the posts. There’s no offset column placement to work around — you drive straight in, center the car, and go. On an asymmetrical lift, the front columns are set back and rotated slightly so the front arms are shorter and the rear arms are longer, which opens up a wider door swing for driver entry and exit on a working bay.

For restoration and metal work, symmetrical is usually the better call. You’re not hopping in and out of the car repeatedly during a fender repair or frame straightening job — you’re positioning it once and leaving it up for hours or days. Centered weight distribution on a symmetrical car lift also tends to feel more stable when you’re doing heavier chassis work, cutting panels, or hanging a body off the frame. If you’re buying primarily for oil changes and tire work on daily drivers, asymmetrical arms might serve you better. But for the kind of project work West Des Moines hobbyists tend to do — old trucks, muscle cars, frame-off jobs — a symmetrical car lift is the more forgiving, more predictable setup.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

Before you even think about floor space, measure your ceiling. A two-post symmetrical car lift with a vehicle raised to full height plus the columns themselves can require 12 feet of clearance or more depending on the model and capacity. Garage door openers, light fixtures, ductwork, and low roof trusses are the most common obstacles we run into on home installs. Take an actual tape measure to your lowest overhead point, not a guess.

Also account for the vehicle height itself when raised — a full-size pickup or a lifted truck sitting on top of an already-tall lift can eat clearance fast. It’s a fixable problem if caught early — sometimes it just means adjusting where the columns sit relative to the door — but it’s expensive and frustrating if you find out after the concrete anchors are already set.

Concrete Slab Thickness and Condition

Every symmetrical car lift installation lives or dies by the slab underneath it. Most two-post lifts require a minimum of 4 inches of solid, unreinforced or properly reinforced concrete with a compressive strength rating that’s been cured for at least 28 days. Older Iowa homes, especially anything built before the 1990s, sometimes have thinner slabs or slabs poured directly over questionable fill.

Cracks near where anchor bolts will go are a red flag. So is a slab that’s clearly patched or shows signs of previous settling. We recommend having a straightforward core sample or at minimum a visual inspection done before you order anything. If your slab doesn’t meet spec, you’re not necessarily out of luck — sometimes a small reinforced pad poured specifically for the lift footprint solves it — but that’s a conversation to have before delivery day, not during it.

Electrical and Power Requirements

Most symmetrical car lifts run on standard single-phase power, but voltage and amperage requirements vary by model and hydraulic pump size. Check whether your garage has a dedicated circuit available near the intended install location, or whether you’re going to need an electrician to run new line. Extension cords and shared circuits with other shop tools are not a long-term solution and can trip breakers mid-lift, which is the last thing you want with a vehicle in the air.

Plan the outlet location relative to where the power unit will sit on the lift, not just anywhere convenient. Most installers place the power unit near one column, and running conduit after the fact through a finished garage wall is more work than doing it right the first time. If you’re already planning electrical upgrades for welding equipment or other shop tools, it’s worth bundling that work together.

Freight, Delivery Access, and Unloading

A symmetrical car lift ships as a genuinely heavy freight shipment — columns, carriages, arms, and hydraulic components packed on a pallet that can weigh well over a thousand pounds combined. Confirm your driveway and garage approach can accommodate a freight truck with a liftgate, and that there’s a clear path from the truck to your install location. Steep driveways, narrow alleys, or tight urban lots around West Des Moines can turn a routine delivery into a logistics problem.

Think beyond just fitting the lift in the space — think about how you’ll actually move around it once it’s installed. For restoration work specifically, factor in whether you’ll need to roll in a welding cart, a paint booth setup, or body panels alongside the lift.

Symmetrical car lift columns sit further apart at a consistent width, which for some bay layouts actually simplifies planning compared to the offset geometry of asymmetrical setups. Sketch your bay to scale before ordering, including the swing radius of your garage door and any support posts already in the space.

Confirming Arm Configuration and Capacity Match Your Actual Vehicles

Finally, match the lift’s rated capacity and arm reach to the vehicles you’ll actually be lifting — not just what you own today, but what you’re likely to buy for future projects. A symmetrical car lift rated for 9,000 or 10,000 pounds gives more headroom for heavier trucks or vehicles loaded with restoration equipment than a base 7,000-pound model. Check the arm’s minimum and maximum reach against your widest and narrowest wheelbase vehicles, since some frame contact points on classic trucks and cars sit in unusual spots compared to modern unibody vehicles.
