Why a Symmetrical Car Lift Made Sense for Trailer and Tow Vehicle Work

This shop primarily services tow vehicles, heavy-duty trucks, and the occasional smaller trailer axle job — not motorhomes themselves, which need a different class of equipment entirely, but the pickups and vans that pull them. For differential fluid service specifically, having the vehicle centered and level under even weight distribution matters more than door-swing convenience, since techs are usually working underneath rather than climbing in and out of the cab repeatedly.

We recommended a symmetrical car lift over an asymmetrical configuration for exactly that reason. We coordinated the delivery window for a slower morning so the dock wasn’t also fielding customer trailer drop-offs at the same time, which made the unloading process considerably less chaotic.

Install Day: Bay Layout and Anchor Points

Because this shop already ran heavier truck traffic through its bays, the concrete slab was in good shape — thicker and more heavily reinforced than a typical home garage floor, which made anchor placement straightforward. The bigger consideration was bay width relative to the wider stance of some of the trucks and vans they service. Symmetrical car lift columns sit at a fixed, even width, so we measured against the shop’s widest regular customer vehicles before finalizing placement, leaving margin for mirror clearance and door swing on full-size crew cab trucks.

Electrical was already sufficient for the hydraulic power unit, since the shop had run heavier equipment in that bay previously. Maintenance has been routine — periodic cable and hydraulic checks, standard lubrication schedules — and no surprises on wear given the vehicle weights it handles regularly.
