A collector we worked with in southern Minnesota called us in late fall asking a simple question that turned into a longer conversation: should the arms on his lift be symmetrical or asymmetrical? He was setting up a heated storage garage for two collector cars that only come out a few months a year, and he wanted the install done right the first time. The Question Every Storage Owner Asks First

Almost every conversation about seasonal vehicle storage starts the same way ours did: are the arms symmetrical or asymmetrical, and does it even matter if the cars aren’t being driven in and out constantly? For someone using a lift mainly for storage rather than daily service work, it matters less than it would in a working shop, but it’s not irrelevant either. A symmetrical car lift places the arms at equal length on both sides, centering the vehicle evenly between the posts, which is straightforward and predictable for loading a car once and leaving it up for months.

We explained that asymmetrical arms shift weight forward to help with door clearance and getting in and out of the vehicle while it’s raised, which matters more if you plan to sit in the car, start it periodically, or do light detailing while it’s up. Since this owner mainly wanted the cars raised for winter storage with occasional access for maintenance checks, we walked through both options rather than assuming symmetrical was automatically the right call just because it’s the more common default question we get by email and phone.

Choosing Symmetric for a Two-Car Storage Bay

After looking at his garage layout, we recommended a symmetrical car lift for one bay and kept the second vehicle on a standard four-post for pure storage with no lifting arms involved at all. His two collector cars were similar in length and wheelbase, and a symmetrical car lift gave him consistent, centered loading every single time without needing to adjust arm position based on which car went up that week.

This also simplified things for us on the service side. A symmetrical car lift has fewer adjustment variables to check during inspection because the arm geometry doesn’t change car to car, which matters when a storage owner isn’t a full-time mechanic and wants the equipment to be nearly foolproof between our visits. For a rotating fleet of different-length vehicles, we’d have leaned asymmetric, but for his two similar cars, symmetric was the simpler and more reliable long-term choice.

The Install: What Southern Minnesota Winters Change

Installing a lift meant to hold a car in place through a Minnesota winter comes with a few extra considerations beyond a typical shop install. Heated storage garages can have moisture and temperature swings that affect concrete curing and anchor performance differently than a climate-controlled commercial shop running year-round. We checked his slab thickness and confirmed the anchoring plan accounted for the freeze-thaw cycle common across the Iowa-Minnesota border region before setting the posts.

We also talked through cable routing and lock engagement points specific to long-term static loading. A car sitting raised on a symmetrical car lift for four or five months puts different, more constant stress on the locks and cables than a vehicle cycled up and down daily in a repair shop. Getting that lock engagement right during install mattered more here than it might for a shop lifting and lowering constantly, since the equipment would spend most of its life simply holding weight rather than actively cycling.

First Few Months: Living With the Symmetric Setup

Once the lift was in and both cars were up for the season, the owner reported exactly what we’d hoped: consistent, predictable loading every time he brought a car back in for a mid-winter check or detail session. Because both his vehicles were similar in size, the symmetrical car lift never required him to think about arm repositioning, which was the whole point of recommending it for his specific two-car situation.

He did note that getting into the driver’s seat while the car sat raised required a bit more care than an asymmetrical setup would have allowed, since the arms sit centered rather than swung forward for door clearance. For a car that’s mostly parked and occasionally started rather than actively worked on, that tradeoff was fine by his own account, and it’s a good illustration of why the symmetric-versus-asymmetric decision really does depend on how you use the raised vehicle, not just how you load it.

The First Scheduled Service Visit

We scheduled his first service visit at the standard interval, checking cables, hydraulic fluid, and lock mechanisms even though the lift had spent most of its first several months simply holding two cars in static storage rather than cycling constantly. Static load time still puts wear on components, just differently than a busy shop’s constant up-and-down cycles, and a full inspection caught nothing concerning, which is the outcome we want on every first-year visit.

We did make one small recommendation: rotate which bay gets used for lifting during future maintenance checks isn’t necessary with a fixed symmetrical car lift, but we suggested cycling the lift up and down fully every month or so during storage season rather than leaving it fully static the entire time. That keeps hydraulic seals and cables in better working condition than months of zero movement, and it’s a simple habit that extends the useful life of any storage lift regardless of arm configuration.

What We’d Tell Any Seasonal Storage Owner Considering This Setup

Looking back at this owner’s first year, the lesson generalizes well for anyone in southern Minnesota or Iowa setting up seasonal collector storage. If your vehicles are similar in size and you’re mainly storing rather than actively working on them, a symmetrical car lift is usually the simpler, more predictable choice with fewer variables for a non-professional owner to manage between service visits.

If your collection includes vehicles of very different lengths, or if you plan to spend real time sitting in or working around the raised vehicle regularly, it’s worth having the asymmetric conversation before you commit. Either way, the install details — slab condition, anchor plan for climate swings, and lock engagement for static loading — matter just as much as the arm geometry decision itself, and that’s true whether you’re in a heated Minnesota garage or an Iowa shop running the lift five days a week.
