Techs aren’t relearning pad position for every vehicle orientation, and centered arm geometry reduces the chance of a car being unevenly loaded on the lift during a bearing press or hub removal, which can get physical. If the answer to all three is no, that’s not a dealbreaker, but it changes what we order, liftgate service, and it changes the timeline, because a truck without a liftgate showing up to a shop without a forklift means the crate sits on the trailer until someone solves that problem, often at extra cost and on the driver’s schedule, not yours.

Unloading Safely: What Actually Goes Wrong

The most common freight injuries and equipment damage we hear about happen in the first ten minutes after the truck backs in, when everyone’s excited to get the crate open and people improvise instead of following a plan. Columns for a symmetrical car lift are top-heavy and awkward, and tipping one off a pallet without a forklift or proper straps can crush a foot, damage the column’s mounting plate, or bend an arm before the lift is ever installed.

Our rule for every job, and the rule we push shop owners toward even when we’re not doing the physical unload ourselves, is forklift or pallet jack rated for the actual weight, never hand-carrying a column off a truck bed. Check the packing list against what’s physically on the truck before the driver leaves, because freight damage claims get much harder once the truck is gone. Anchoring and Slab Requirements Before Installation Begins

Skipping this step to save time is the most common cause of lift failures we get called out to investigate later, and it’s entirely preventable with a slab check before the anchors ever go in.

Post-Install Safety Checks Before First Use

After a symmetrical car lift is anchored and assembled, there’s a checklist that has to happen before the first vehicle goes up, and skipping steps here is where shops get hurt. Columns need to be checked for plumb, not just bolted down, arm pins and locks need to be tested through a full range of motion, and the hydraulic or cable system needs a cycle test with no load before anything real gets lifted.
