A truck lift column looks simple on a spec sheet, but the story of actually owning one starts long before the equipment shows up on a trailer. We worked with an RV and trailer service shop in West Des Moines through exactly that process last year — from the first site survey conversation to the first real service call under warranty — and it’s a useful case study for any shop considering mobile columns for exhaust and driveline work on tow vehicles and box trucks. This is that story, month by month, including a few things we’d do differently if we started over, because the planning phase matters just as much as the equipment itself.

The Problem That Started the Conversation

The shop’s original setup was a pair of aging in-ground lifts that couldn’t handle the wheelbase or the axle weight of the diesel dually tow vehicles and small box trucks coming in for exhaust work. Techs were spending real time working from creepers and low jacks to get at exhaust hangers and driveline U-joints on trucks that were simply too long and too heavy for the existing equipment. The shop owner called us specifically wanting to know what a truck lift column setup could do for exhaust and driveline access that their fixed lifts couldn’t — namely, handling variable wheelbases without a dedicated bay for every vehicle length.

What made this shop’s situation a good fit for mobile columns rather than another fixed 4-post was the mix of vehicle types coming through. One day it’s a quarter-ton pickup pulling a fifth wheel, the next it’s a box truck with a chassis nobody in the shop had lifted before. A truck lift column setup doesn’t care about wheelbase the way a fixed-rail lift does — you position the columns wherever the frame or axle actually sits.

Site Survey: What We Actually Checked Before Recommending Anything

Before we quoted anything, we spent half a day walking the shop floor. We checked slab flatness across the bay — mobile columns need a reasonably level, structurally sound floor since there’s no anchoring to compensate for dips or slope the way some in-ground designs can. We measured overhead clearance with the tallest RV chassis they service in mind, checked door height and swing for pulling a lifted vehicle straight through, and mapped out charging station placement for battery-powered columns so cables wouldn’t cross a main walking path.

We also asked about the shop’s actual workflow, not just the equipment wishlist. How many vehicles get lifted per day. Whether two jobs ever run simultaneously in the same bay. Whether they wanted synchronized wireless columns that could split into two independent 2-column pairs for smaller vehicles while still combining into a 4-column or 6-column set for longer trucks. That flexibility ended up being the deciding factor — the shop didn’t want to buy two separate lift systems for two different vehicle classes.

Choosing Capacity and Set Size for a Mixed RV and Truck Fleet

Given the mix of dually pickups, box trucks, and occasional Class A chassis work, we landed on a set sized well above what a pure pickup shop would need — enough per-column capacity that towing and cargo weight wouldn’t push any single vehicle near the ceiling. We’d rather a shop have real headroom above their heaviest realistic vehicle than get stuck needing an upgrade eighteen months in. The chunk of feedback we hear most often from shops that undersized their first truck lift column purchase is regret over not accounting for the outlier vehicle that shows up twice a year.

We also talked through rise height carefully, because exhaust and driveline access benefits from a taller working height than, say, an oil change. Nobody wants a tech crouching under a full-size chassis for an hour to swap a U-joint. The jump in price from a mid-height column set to a taller one is real, but for a shop doing driveline and exhaust work as a core service line, we generally recommend paying for the extra rise rather than compromising and having techs work hunched for years.

Installation Week: What Actually Happened

Install took place over two days once the equipment arrived. Day one was uncrating, positioning the charging stations, and running the initial power-up and calibration sequence on each column. Day two was training — we walked the whole crew through synchronized operation, safety-cam engagement, load positioning for both pickup frames and RV chassis rails, and emergency lowering procedures. We don’t consider an install finished until the crew has actually run a truck up and down several times under our supervision, not just watched us do it once.

One adjustment we made mid-install was reworking the charging station layout — the shop’s original plan put a station where a tech would need to step over a cable to reach a workbench, which we flagged during the site survey but re-confirmed once the columns were physically in place. Small thing, but exactly the kind of detail that either gets fixed before day-to-day use starts or becomes an annoying habit the whole shop works around for years.

The First Real Service Call

About four months in, the shop called about a lock engagement issue — a specific column wasn’t seating its safety lock reliably on one particular vehicle length. This is a good example of a repeat-customer call we get fairly often: not a catastrophic failure, but a specific-condition issue that needs a trained eye. We came out, found a minor calibration drift on that column’s lock sensor, and corrected it in under an hour. The shop had caught it early because their crew had been trained during install to notice exactly that kind of inconsistency rather than assume it was normal.

That’s a direct payoff of the training time we put in during install week. A truck lift column with a lock issue is not something to keep using and hope it resolves itself — and because the crew knew what correct engagement looked and sounded like, they called us the same day instead of two weeks later after it got worse.

Where the Shop Stands One Year In

A year into ownership, the shop runs the mobile column set daily across a wider vehicle mix than they originally anticipated, including trailer axle work that wasn’t part of the original use case. The flexibility of repositioning columns per vehicle, rather than being locked into a fixed rail spacing, turned out to be the single biggest operational win — more than the capacity numbers or the rise height, which were the two things they’d focused on most during the buying decision. That’s a pattern we see often: shops evaluate a truck lift column purchase on the spec sheet, but the daily value ends up being in the flexibility they didn’t fully appreciate until they were using it.

Maintenance so far has been limited to routine inspection and the one lock calibration call, which is about what we’d expect for a well-installed system in its first year. We check in with this shop periodically to review wear points and confirm the crew’s still following the training procedures, because equipment this flexible only stays safe if the habits around it stay consistent.
