By the time we finished the walk-through, he’d changed his mind, and a year later he’s still glad he did. Why an RV Shop Even Considers a Two Post In-Ground Lift

Most people picture in-ground lifts in old-school dealership service bays, and there’s a reason for that — the cylinder sits below the slab, the columns are shorter, and the ceiling clearance problem that kills so many overhead installs simply disappears. For an RV and trailer shop with tall units rolling through the door, that matters more than most other shops realize until they’re mid-quote with an overhead model and discover the arms won’t clear a fifth-wheel nose.

The Cedar Rapids shop’s building had roughly 13 feet of clear height, which is workable for many two post overhead lifts on cars and light trucks, but the owner also wanted the option to pull a trailer or small motorhome partway into the bay for underside work without columns and crossbeams boxing him in. A two post in-ground lift gave him that flexibility because there’s no top beam and the columns are lower profile. We also walked him through the tradeoffs — in-ground installation means saw-cutting the slab, running the cylinder in a sleeve, and planning for a fixed location, whereas an overhead unit can be relocated more easily down the road. For a shop that wasn’t moving anytime soon, the permanence wasn’t a downside. It let him dedicate that bay to daily maintenance work without worrying about headroom on every vehicle that came through.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms: The Decision That Almost Went Sideways

This is where the first-year story gets interesting. When we first quoted the job, the shop was leaning toward a symmetric two post in-ground lift because that’s what a competing supplier had recommended, and symmetric arms are genuinely the right call for a lot of RV and trailer work since axle configurations are often centered and predictable. But once we walked through the actual mix of vehicles — daily maintenance on customer pickups and SUVs used for towing, plus the RVs themselves — it became clear asymmetric arms would serve him better on the vehicle side of the business.

Asymmetric arm geometry swings the vehicle’s center of gravity off the columns, which opens up the door area and makes it dramatically easier to get in and out of a truck or SUV once it’s in the air — something a symmetric lift doesn’t do as well. Since most of his daily maintenance volume is trucks and tow vehicles rather than the RVs themselves, we adjusted the spec to an asymmetric configuration before the order went in. He still lifts trailers and smaller travel trailers on it without issue; the arm reach and pad placement handle that fine. The lesson from that first year: don’t let a generic recommendation drive the arm style decision. Walk through your actual daily maintenance mix vehicle by vehicle, then pick symmetric or asymmetric based on what rolls through the door most often, not on what’s easiest to quote.

Install Day: What Actually Happens with In-Ground Equipment

In-ground installation is a different animal than bolting an overhead lift to a slab, and we tell every shop this upfront so there are no surprises. Our crew saw-cut the bay floor, excavated for the cylinder sleeve, set the sleeve plumb and level, and poured back around it before the columns ever went in. That part of the job took most of a day before we could even start assembling the lift itself. Concrete cure time matters here too — we don’t rush that step, because a cylinder installed in green concrete is a problem waiting to happen.

The shop owner asked, reasonably, whether this made the job more expensive or slower than an overhead lift. It’s a fair question and the honest answer is yes, somewhat, on both counts — in-ground work involves more labor and more waiting on concrete than a surface-mount install. But for his building, with the ceiling height constraints and the trailer clearance he wanted, it was the right tradeoff. We also handled the hydraulic line routing underground during that same phase, which kept his shop floor completely clear of hose runs — a detail he mentioned more than once during that first year, since nothing snags a floor jack or a rolling cart.

The First Service Call: What We Checked and Why

About ten months in, we came back out for the shop’s first scheduled service. Daily maintenance use — meaning the lift cycles multiple times a day, five or six days a week — puts real wear on cables, pulleys, and hydraulic seals faster than a lift that only runs a few times a week. We checked cable tension on both sides, inspected the arm restraint pins and locks for wear, and tested the safety lock engagement at several heights to confirm nothing had drifted out of adjustment.

We also pulled a hydraulic fluid sample and checked the cylinder packing for any sign of weeping around the seal, since in-ground cylinders are harder to visually inspect day to day than the exposed cylinders on an overhead lift. Everything came back clean, which isn’t surprising for a well-installed unit at ten months, but it’s exactly the kind of check that catches a problem while it’s still cheap to fix. The shop owner had also noticed one arm sticking slightly when swinging out — turned out to be dirt buildup in the pivot, not a mechanical issue, and it took five minutes to clean and grease. That’s the value of a first-year service call: most of what you find is minor, but you find it before it becomes a shutdown.

Daily Maintenance Wear Patterns We See on In-Ground Lifts

Across the shops we service, daily maintenance use on a two post in-ground lift tends to show wear in predictable places, and it’s worth knowing them before you’re a year in. Arm pads wear fastest on shops running a wide mix of vehicle heights, since techs are constantly repositioning pads and swinging arms to find contact points. Locking mechanisms are the other area we watch closely on high-cycle shops. Before the lift, the owner told us daily maintenance jobs like brake work, suspension checks, and undercarriage inspections on tow vehicles were done on floor jacks and stands, which meant one bay tied up for longer stretches and techs working in awkward positions. With the two post in-ground lift installed and tuned for asymmetric access, those same jobs moved faster and the bay turned over more vehicles per day.

He also started using the lift for pre-purchase inspections on used tow vehicles customers were considering, something he hadn’t offered before because getting a vehicle fully off the ground for a real undercarriage look wasn’t practical with jacks alone. That became a small but steady add-on service. None of this required anything exotic from the equipment — it’s the same in-ground lift we installed on day one — but having reliable, fast access changed what kinds of jobs the shop was willing to take on. That’s often the real return on a lift like this: not just doing the same work faster, but being able to say yes to work you’d have turned down before.

What We’d Tell Any Shop Considering an In-Ground Install

If you’re weighing a two post in-ground lift against an overhead model, start with your ceiling height and your vehicle mix, not with price alone. In-ground costs more upfront in labor because of the concrete work, but it solves clearance problems overhead lifts can’t touch, and it keeps your floor free of hose runs and top beams. Walk through your real vehicle mix with whoever’s quoting the job, and push back if the recommendation doesn’t match what rolls through your door. Finally, plan for a service schedule that matches your cycle count, not a generic calendar reminder.
