A vehicle service lift needs headroom not just for the vehicle, but for the lift’s own rise, the technician standing on the platform, and enough clearance to raise a Class A or fifth-wheel high enough to work comfortably underneath. In a building with 14- to 16-foot sidewalls, a full-rise 4-post drive-on lift is usually fine. Go lower than that, and you’re negotiating with physics — either you get a lower max rise, or you need a shorter vehicle mix, or you end up needing a pit or in-ground option that changes your whole floor plan.
We always ask about eave height, not just sidewall height, because roof trusses and HVAC ductwork steal real inches you don’t get back. We map bay depth against door height and the turning radius needed to back a long trailer into position, because a drive-on 4-post lift only works if the vehicle can actually get onto it without three-point turns in a 30×40 space.

Weight Capacity Planning for a Mixed Trailer and Truck Bay
Most RV and trailer shops aren’t lifting one type of vehicle — they’re moving between half-ton pickups, dually trucks, travel trailers, and the occasional Class A motorhome in the same week. A vehicle service lift rated at 7,000 to 9,000 pounds handles the passenger truck end fine, but heavier dually trucks and loaded trailers can push past that quickly. A poured concrete floor is a good start, but slab thickness and cure time matter more than most first-time buyers realize. Anchoring a 4-post or drive-on lift requires a slab that meets a minimum thickness and PSI rating, and if the concrete was poured recently, it needs proper cure time before anchors go in — rushing this step is one of the most common install delays we see. We ask about floor age and thickness before we ever schedule an install date, because finding out on-site that the slab isn’t ready means a wasted trip and a delayed opening.
For shops built specifically around a planned lift, we recommend getting the lift’s footprint and anchor pattern from us before the concrete goes in, even if the lift itself won’t arrive for months. It costs nothing to plan ahead and it prevents the awkward conversation about saw-cutting or reinforcing a slab that’s already cured.
