Start With the Vehicles You Actually Work On
Before you even look at a vehicle service lift spec sheet, list out every vehicle that’s likely to sit on it over the next five years. Farm shops rarely deal with just one type of vehicle — you might be pulling exhaust systems off a half-ton pickup one day and working driveline components on a heavier flatbed or grain truck the next. A lift rated at 9,000 pounds might handle your everyday pickup fine but leave you stuck when a heavier truck rolls in for driveshaft work.
We tell farm shop owners to size up rather than down. A 12,000 to 14,000 pound two-post lift costs a bit more up front but covers nearly everything short of true heavy-duty truck work, and it gives you room to take on side jobs for neighbors or other farms without turning work away. If your shop occasionally sees box trucks or service trucks, factor in the extra wheelbase length those vehicles need — arm reach on a vehicle service lift matters as much as capacity when the truck is long.
Overhead Clearance Is Non-Negotiable for Exhaust and Driveline Work
Exhaust and driveline jobs require a technician to work comfortably underneath a lifted vehicle for extended stretches, often with a torch, cutoff wheel, or transmission jack involved. That means ceiling height in your shop has to accommodate the vehicle’s height plus the lift’s full rise, plus enough headroom for a technician to stand upright without ducking. We’ve measured plenty of pole barns with 12 to 14 foot sidewalls that seemed generous until a raised pickup with a lift kit and full-height columns ate up nearly all of it.
Before ordering any vehicle service lift, measure your actual clear ceiling height at the exact spot the lift will sit, not just the general building height, since trusses, lighting, and ductwork often hang lower than the walls suggest. Add the tallest vehicle you expect to service, plus the lift’s maximum rise, and leave at least a foot of buffer. If the numbers don’t work, a lower-profile lift or a mid-rise configuration might be a better fit for your building than a full-rise two-post unit.
Site Survey: What We Actually Check Before Installation
When we do a site survey for a farm shop in northern Missouri or anywhere else in our service area, we’re checking four things: slab thickness and condition, ceiling clearance, floor levelness, and clear approach space for driving vehicles on and off the lift. Concrete needs to meet a minimum thickness and cure time for anchoring bolts to hold under load — a slab poured for general shop use isn’t automatically rated for lift anchoring, especially in older pole buildings where the floor was an afterthought.
We also check for buried utilities, floor drains, or in-floor heat lines that might run through where anchor bolts need to go. Discovering a hidden line after you’ve ordered the lift is a bad day for everyone. If your slab doesn’t meet spec, we’ll tell you before installation, not after, and we can advise on whether a partial repour or a different lift footprint solves the problem more affordably. This kind of pre-installation check is standard for us and it’s worth doing even if you’re buying the vehicle service lift from someone else.
Two-Post vs. Four-Post for Underbody Access
For pure exhaust and driveline access, a two-post lift generally wins because the open design leaves nothing blocking your path from front axle to rear. A four-post lift’s runways can get in the way when you need to work across the full width of the vehicle’s underside, though a four-post with a rolling jack bridge can partially offset that. If your farm shop also uses the lift for storage or alignment work between repair jobs, a four-post might still make sense — just know you’re trading some underbody access for that versatility.
Most farm shops we’ve installed for choose a two-post vehicle service lift specifically because driveline and exhaust work is a big part of the workload, and the unobstructed access pays off daily. If you’re torn between the two, think about how often you actually need to drive a vehicle up and park it versus how often you need full 360-degree access underneath — that answer usually settles the decision quickly.
Budgeting for the Whole Job, Not Just the Lift
A common mistake we see is budgeting only for the equipment and forgetting installation, electrical work, and any concrete repair. A vehicle service lift needs a dedicated air supply for most two-post models, proper anchoring hardware, and in some cases new electrical circuits if your farm shop’s existing setup wasn’t built with a lift in mind. None of this is exotic work, but it adds real cost and time if you haven’t planned for it.
We recommend budgeting an additional 15 to 25 percent above the lift’s price for installation-related costs, more if your slab needs work. Lead time is also worth planning around — if you need a lift installed before winter or before a specific farm season ramps up, order early. What to Ask Any Installer Before You Buy

What’s the lead time from order to installation? Is the anchoring hardware and any necessary concrete work included in the quote, or billed separately after the fact? Do they stock replacement parts for the brand they’re selling you, or will you be waiting weeks for a part from overseas if something breaks?
These questions matter more in rural areas, where a lift sitting broken for a month waiting on parts can shut down real income for a farm shop. We’d rather spend twenty extra minutes on a phone call or site visit up front than have a customer call us six months later frustrated that the lift they bought doesn’t fit their actual work. If exhaust and driveline access is your priority, tell whoever you’re buying from that specifically, since it changes the recommendation.
