That covers everything from a compact sedan to a full-size pickup or SUV with a little room to spare. If you’re planning to work on anything heavier — a 3/4-ton truck with a plow, a box van, or a small fleet vehicle — you’ll want to step up to a 12,000 or 15,000 pound rated lift instead of assuming your 7K unit will handle it occasionally.
We always ask customers two questions before recommending a rating: what’s the heaviest vehicle you own or service today, and what might you realistically own in five years? Buying vehicle service lifts is not like buying a tool you’ll replace next season — a quality 2-post or 4-post lift should last well over a decade, so it pays to size up slightly rather than get boxed in. Electrical and Phase Requirements Nobody Tells You About Upfront
This is the part that trips up more first-time buyers than anything else. Most residential-grade vehicle service lifts run on standard 220-volt single-phase power, which is what you’ll find in the vast majority of home garages and pole buildings already wired for a welder or air compressor. But commercial-grade lifts, especially larger 4-post and in-ground units, sometimes call for 3-phase power, which most residential services don’t have without a costly conversion or a phase converter.
Before you buy, check your panel. You need to know your available voltage, your amperage, and whether you’re single-phase or 3-phase before we ever quote a lift, because the motor and control box have to match your building’s electrical setup. In a shop with 12-foot sidewalls and concrete floors like the one described earlier, standard single-phase 220V is almost always sufficient for a 7,000 to 10,000 pound lift. We walk every customer through this before delivery so nobody discovers an electrical mismatch after the lift is sitting in their driveway.
Concrete Floor Thickness and Anchoring
Your floor matters just as much as your electrical panel. Most vehicle service lifts require a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and that number climbs for heavier-rated lifts or in-ground installations. A newer pole building slab that hasn’t fully cured yet — concrete needs roughly 28 days to reach full strength — isn’t ready for anchoring, even if it looks solid.
We ask for floor thickness, age, and rebar or mesh reinforcement details before every install quote. If your slab is thin, cracked, or too new, we’ll tell you straight rather than bolt down a lift that could fail an anchor pull test. This is one of the most overlooked parts of the buying process, and it’s also one of the easiest to get right if you just measure and ask before you order.
2-Post vs 4-Post for Oil Changes and Fluid Work
For pure oil changes and fluid service, a 2-post lift is often the more efficient choice because it leaves the underside of the vehicle completely open — no runways blocking access to the pan, filter, or transmission. A 4-post lift, by contrast, uses drive-on runways that can partially obstruct certain drain plugs unless you add a rolling jack or mid-rise attachment.
That said, if storage is part of your goal — parking a second vehicle beneath a lifted one, as many of our Iowa customers plan to do in larger pole buildings — the 4-post design wins on flexibility even if it’s slightly less convenient for quick fluid changes. Ceiling Height and Clearance Math
A 12-foot sidewall sounds generous until you do the math on a 4-post lift fully raised with a vehicle on top. Most 4-post units add 6 to 7 feet of lift height at full extension, and once you add the vehicle’s own height, you can eat up more clearance than expected fast. Always measure to the lowest obstruction — including garage door tracks, lighting, and HVAC ductwork — not just the peak of the ceiling.
For shops with 12-foot sidewalls, most 2-post and 4-post lifts rated for passenger vehicles will fit comfortably with room to spare, but we still recommend sending us exact measurements before ordering. New Lift vs Used: What We Recommend for Maintenance Shops
For shops focused on oil changes and fluid service rather than heavy structural work, a new lift from an established brand is usually the safer buy, since warranty coverage and consistent hydraulic performance matter more when the lift runs daily. Used lifts can save money upfront, but you inherit unknown wear on cables, cylinders, and safety locks unless a qualified installer inspects them first.

If cash flow is tight, financing options exist that spread the cost over time with no interest for the first year on qualifying purchases, which often makes more sense than buying a used lift with unknown history. Either way, insist on a professional inspection and installation — a lift is only as safe as its anchoring and setup, regardless of how new or used the equipment is.
