A year ago we installed a 12k two post lift in a private collector’s storage building in southwest Iowa, and enough time has passed now that we can talk honestly about what went right, what we’d do differently, and what that first service call actually looked like. Before the Lift Arrived: Checking the Slab
Before we’d even talk seriously about which 12k two post lift model made sense, we spent a good chunk of a Saturday morning with a slab. Storage buildings built for collector vehicles are sometimes finished later than the original structure, and this one had a slab poured with tools and general storage in mind — not necessarily a two-post lift with concentrated point loads on four anchor locations. The rule of thumb we use for a 12,000 lb capacity two-post lift is a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, ideally 4,000 PSI, without excessive cracking near the anchor zones.
What we found here was reasonably good news — a 4.5 inch slab, poured a few years prior, with no significant cracking. But we still did core checks at each proposed anchor point, because a slab that looks fine on the surface can have voids or honeycombing underneath from a bad pour. This step matters more for a collector building than a working shop, ironically, because these slabs don’t always get the same scrutiny during construction that a commercial garage floor does. Skipping it to save an afternoon is how you end up with a lift that works loose within a year.
The Rebar Question Nobody Asks Until It’s a Problem
One thing we always check, and one thing almost no customer thinks to ask about ahead of time, is where the rebar sits in the slab relative to the anchor bolt pattern for a 12k two post lift. Anchors need to bite into solid concrete, not into or immediately next to rebar, because drilling into steel reinforcement either won’t set the anchor properly or risks cracking the surrounding concrete when you try. In an older slab, there’s no guarantee the rebar grid lines up conveniently with where the lift’s base plates need to sit.
For this southwest Iowa install, we got lucky — the rebar grid was on a standard spacing that cleared all eight anchor points without adjustment. That’s not always the case. We’ve had installs where we had to shift the entire lift footprint six to eight inches to avoid drilling into steel, which changes clearance to walls, doors, and adjacent equipment. Anyone planning a slab for a future 12k two post lift install, even years out, should tell their concrete contractor to keep rebar spacing wide enough to give an installer room to work around it later.
Install Day: What Actually Took the Time
The lift itself went in over the course of a single day, which surprises people who expect a multi-day production. Columns went up, arms were attached, hydraulic lines were run, and the unit was leveled and anchored by early afternoon. What actually ate the clock wasn’t the mechanical assembly — it was verifying level across the slab and getting the anchor torque specs exactly right on all eight bolts. Rushing anchor torque is one of the most common shortcuts we see on lifts installed by less experienced crews, and it’s the difference between a lift that stays tight for a decade and one that needs re-torquing every six months.
By late afternoon we ran the lift through a full cycle test empty, then loaded, checking that both columns rose in sync and that the safety locks engaged evenly on both sides. For a collector customer who might only use the lift a handful of times a month, that even engagement matters even more than it would in a busy shop — infrequent use means small problems sit unnoticed longer before anyone would catch them.
First Six Months: Light Use, No Surprises
For the first six months, this 12k two post lift saw almost exactly the use case the customer described upfront — pulling a vehicle up for exhaust inspection, dropping it to swap a driveline component, and lowering it back down for storage. Nothing dramatic, nothing daily. That’s actually the easiest duty cycle for a lift like this to handle, and it’s part of why we didn’t get a single call in that window. Hydraulic seals and cables see far less wear under occasional use than they would in a fleet shop cycling ten times a day.
The one thing we did recommend, and the customer followed through on, was a basic monthly visual check — looking at cable tension, checking for hydraulic fluid weeping at the cylinder, and confirming the safety locks were still engaging cleanly. None of that requires a technician visit; it’s a five-minute walk-around. For collectors who aren’t in the garage daily the way a shop owner would be, that habit is what catches small issues before they become a stuck lift with a car on it.
The First Service Call: What Twelve Months of Sitting Revealed
Right around the one-year mark, we got the call for a scheduled service visit — not an emergency, just the annual inspection we recommend for any 12k two post lift regardless of use level. What we found was mild but worth noting: the equalizer cable tension had drifted slightly out of spec, which is completely normal for a lift in its first year as cables settle in, but it needed adjustment to keep both columns rising perfectly level. We also topped off hydraulic fluid slightly and re-checked all eight anchor torque specs, finding two that had loosened just slightly from that initial settling period.
None of this was alarming — it’s exactly what we’d expect and exactly why the first-year service visit matters even on a lift that’s barely been used.
