A weekend hobbyist across the river in western Illinois emailed us wanting a 2 post car lift for his detached garage where he does suspension and shock work on an old muscle car and a project truck. He had a shopping list from a forum, no idea what his panel could support, and a hunch that his electrical was going to be the bottleneck. He was right. This is the pre-purchase checklist we walked him through, focused specifically on the electrical circuit and phase requirements that make or break a home-garage 2 post car lift install. If you skip this checklist, you either buy the wrong lift or you buy the right lift and cannot power it.

Start with your panel: what amperage do you actually have?
The very first check on any 2 post car lift purchase is your main electrical panel. Not the outlet on the wall, not the extension cord you were going to use, the main panel. Open the door and read the main breaker at the top. For most homes built after 1980, it is a 200-amp panel. For older homes it might be 100-amp or 150-amp. That total capacity determines how much you can add. A 10K single-phase two-post typically draws a 20 or 30-amp 220V circuit. That is well within a 200-amp home panel’s budget, but tight on a 100-amp panel if you already have an electric range, dryer, AC, and water heater competing for load.
Take a photo of your panel with the breaker labels visible and send it to us before you order. We will look at the total connected load and tell you honestly whether adding a 30-amp 220V circuit for a 2 post car lift is going to push you past safe headroom. If you are close to capacity, an electrician can sometimes redistribute loads or install a subpanel for a few hundred dollars. If you are already over-panel, you may need a service upgrade before the lift is realistic. We have had to have that conversation with a few buyers. Better to have it now than after the lift is delivered.
Single-phase versus three-phase: which one do you have?
Most homes and small garages have single-phase power. Most commercial shops have three-phase power. A 2 post car lift comes in both variants, and they are not interchangeable. If you buy a three-phase unit and try to run it on single-phase, it will not start. If you buy a single-phase unit and connect it to three-phase, you may damage the motor. This is a check that should happen before you place the order, not after the truck arrives. On the western Illinois hobbyist’s install, his garage had single-phase power from the house feed. That is normal.
If you are unsure whether you have single-phase or three-phase, count the breakers in your panel serving 220V loads. Single-phase 220V uses two adjacent breaker slots. Three-phase uses three adjacent slots and requires a three-phase feed from the utility. Home services almost never have three-phase unless the homeowner specifically ordered it. Commercial shops usually do. When you call us about a 2 post car lift, we will ask this question early. If you do not know the answer, take a photo of the panel and we will identify it for you. Do not guess.
Amperage requirement: 20 amps, 30 amps, or higher?
The specific amperage requirement varies by lift model. A basic 10K single-phase 2 post car lift with a two-horsepower motor draws about 20 amps at 220V under load. A larger 10K unit with a two-and-a-half or three-horsepower motor draws 30 amps. Higher-capacity lifts (12K and up) usually need 30-amp circuits at minimum. The exact number is on the motor plate and on the manufacturer’s spec sheet. Never assume. We have had shoppers order a lift specced for 30 amps into a garage with a 20-amp outlet, and the motor tripped every start cycle until they upgraded the wiring.
When you finalize a model with us, we send the exact circuit requirement to you before the truck rolls. If your existing 220V outlet is 20 amps and the lift needs 30, you either upgrade the circuit or we quote a different lift within the capacity your outlet supports. This is the kind of check that should be settled a week before install. It is not a check we skip. On a 2 post car lift install, the electrical spec is a hard constraint, not a suggestion. Match the lift to the circuit or upgrade the circuit to match the lift. There is no middle ground.
Outlet position and cord length
Even if the circuit spec is right, outlet position matters. The powered column on a two-post has a controller box mounted about waist-high, and the power cord runs from there to the wall outlet. Cord length is usually eight to ten feet. If your outlet is on the opposite wall from the intended column position, the cord will not reach and you will be tempted to use an extension. Do not do that. Extension cords on lift motors overheat and are a code violation. Have your electrician move the outlet if needed, or reposition the lift.
On the western Illinois hobbyist’s garage, the existing 220V outlet was on the back wall behind where the truck normally sits. We repositioned the intended lift column so the outlet fell within cord reach without extension. That took a five-minute conversation to sort out before the anchors were drilled. If we had ignored it, he would have had a lift with a cord dangling across the garage floor. On any 2 post car lift install, plan the outlet position and the column position together. They are not independent decisions. They affect each other for the life of the equipment.
Voltage drop and long runs from the panel
If your garage is detached and the panel is inside the house, the 220V feed to the garage might run fifty or a hundred feet underground. Long runs at 220V can drop voltage under load, which starves the lift motor and shortens its life. The general rule is a maximum three-percent voltage drop, which means larger wire for longer runs. For a 30-amp circuit at 100 feet, you want at least 8-gauge copper. If your existing garage feed is 10-gauge or smaller, an electrician needs to evaluate whether the run can support the lift motor at full draw.
This is one of the checks that catches home-garage buyers by surprise. Their garage has a 220V outlet already, they assume the wiring is fine, and then the lift motor cycles slowly or trips the breaker under load. We had one buyer whose garage feed was 12-gauge for 60 feet, which was fine for a compressor but not for a 30-amp lift motor. He upgraded the feed to 8-gauge and the lift ran perfectly after that. On a 2 post car lift, voltage drop is not a spec sheet number, but it is a real installation consideration for detached garages with long feeds.
Breaker size and dedicated circuit best practice
The breaker for a 2 post car lift should be sized to the motor’s continuous draw plus a safety margin. Most manufacturers spec a 30-amp breaker for a 30-amp motor circuit, or a 20-amp breaker for a 20-amp circuit. The circuit should be dedicated to the lift. That means no compressor, welder, or other tool on the same circuit. Dedicated circuits are a code requirement in most jurisdictions and a best practice in every jurisdiction. If your compressor and lift share a circuit, the shared draw will trip the breaker every time you use both.
For the hobbyist doing suspension work, this matters because suspension jobs often involve running the lift and the impact simultaneously. If the compressor is on the same circuit as the lift, both stop when the breaker trips mid-job. Dedicated circuits solve that. Ask your electrician for a dedicated 220V run from the panel to the lift’s outlet. On a 2 post car lift install, we specify dedicated circuit in every quote. It is not optional if you want the lift to run reliably alongside your other 220V garage tools.
Final checklist walkthrough
Before you place the order on any the lift, verify: panel amperage headroom, phase (single or three), specific amperage requirement of the chosen lift model, outlet position relative to intended column position, voltage drop on any long feed, and dedicated-circuit status. Six items. Twenty minutes on the phone. That is the whole checklist. Every item that gets missed becomes an expensive fix after install. Every item that gets confirmed becomes a boring install with the lift running perfectly on delivery day.
