A 2 post car lift in a dealership restoration shop is a fundamentally different tool than one in a working service bay, and the technical specifications that matter for restoration and metal work are not the same specs that matter for oil changes and brake jobs. Ceiling height math for restoration work

Restoration work often involves classic cars that are shorter than modern vehicles, but the lift still needs to raise them to a full working height. A 2 post car lift with overhead crossbar typically has a maximum drive-through height around 12 feet 4 inches to the underside of the shutoff bar. Add the safety mechanism clearance and you want a minimum clear ceiling of 12 feet 6 inches. For an Urbandale dealership shop with an existing 14-foot ceiling in the service bays, this is easy. For an older building with 11-foot 6-inch clear, you either raise the roof or switch to baseplate.

Baseplate configuration adds unlimited overhead room, which sounds ideal for restoration work where you might want to hang a body-off dolly or a ceiling-mounted panel jig above the car. What matters more in a restoration bay is the working area around the lift. When a body is stripped to bare metal and mounted on a rotisserie fixture, the point loads can concentrate on small caster wheels well beyond the lift’s own footprint. Verify your slab is uniformly poured, not just under the columns.

Older dealer buildings in Urbandale sometimes have slabs that were poured decades apart with different mix designs. If your restoration bay is in an addition or a repurposed area, core-sample the slab in two or three locations before committing to a 2 post car lift install. A slab that meets spec at the column locations but is thinner under the working area can crack under heavy body work. Standard three-stage telescoping arms on a 2 post car lift typically bottom out at about 3.5 to 4 inches of pad height, which puts you right at the edge of clearance for a lot of classic cars. Drop-end arms lower the pad to roughly 3 inches, and aluminum low-profile pad adapters push that under 3 inches on some models. Verify these numbers against the specific cars you plan to service.

Arm reach at full extension is the other geometry question. Three-stage arms typically extend to 60 inches or more from the column, which reaches well past factory lift points on most classic cars. What you occasionally need is a shorter minimum reach because some classic cars have narrower frame widths, and the arm needs to fold tight against the column to get the pad in position. Restoration shops in Urbandale that service both classics and modern cars usually end up with three-stage arms as a versatile compromise. Pad options and paint protection

Restoration and metal work put a premium on paint and body protection. For that reason we recommend soft polyurethane pads or protected pad covers for restoration bays. Frame rail contact is the ideal load point on almost any classic car, and the frame rails are typically solid and paint-protected under a factory undercoating. If your restoration project has been down to bare metal on the frame rails, be extra cautious with pad placement because the paint underneath is fresh and soft. A quick check we recommend: raise the vehicle six inches, walk around it, verify all four pads have full contact without slipping, then raise further. This is standard for any 2 post car lift use, but the consequences of a slipped pad on a restoration project are much more expensive than on a beater. Slow down at the initial raise.

Electrical, air, and welder integration

An Urbandale dealer restoration bay typically has more electrical needs than a standard service bay. You need the 2 post car lift circuit (220V single-phase or three-phase 208V), a welder outlet (often 240V at 50 amps), compressed air for pneumatic tools and paint work, and sometimes 480V three-phase if the shop has a plasma cutter or larger machining equipment. Route these separately so a weld arc does not affect the lift’s power unit and so the compressor cycle does not knock out lighting.

Follow the manual exactly, and torque anchors to the specified value with a calibrated torque wrench. Do not eyeball anchor tension; the manufacturer specifies torque values based on the pull-out strength required at rated capacity.

Install-day sequence at a dealership restoration bay starts with laying out the column footprint on the slab, drilling the pilot holes with a rotary hammer, cleaning holes with compressed air and a wire brush, setting anchors to torque, plumb-checking each column with a four-foot level in two axes, mounting the crossbar or baseplate channel, running cables and hydraulic hoses, filling the reservoir with the correct fluid, cycling the lift empty six to eight times, and then loading it with a shop vehicle for a first-cycle load test.
