A first-time buyer in Marion emailed us this spring wanting a 2 post car lift that would let him store a summer convertible up top and park a daily driver underneath from October through April. He had never owned a lift before, had a nine-and-a-half-foot garage ceiling, and had opinions from every neighbor about which brand to buy. We spent about forty minutes on the phone with him and, at the end of the conversation, he knew exactly what to order and what would not fit. This is that conversation rewritten as a straightforward buyer’s guide to picking a 2 post car lift for seasonal vehicle storage in a home garage.

Is a two-post even right for storage, or should you buy a four-post?

The first thing to know is that a two-post is not the traditional storage choice. For pure storage where a vehicle sits parked in the air for months, a four-post is easier because the car sits on runways, not on pinch-weld pads. Four-post lifts let you leave a vehicle on the lift without any concern about pad slippage or pinch-weld stress. So why would a first-time buyer in Marion pick a 2 post car lift instead? Because a two-post is also a working lift. You can do brakes, oil changes, and suspension work on a two-post that you cannot do on a four-post without a rolling bridge jack.

The Marion buyer wanted both storage and service capability out of a single lift because his garage only had room for one. A 2 post car lift covers both use cases if you install it right and use the safety cams for long-term storage. A four-post would have been the simpler storage choice, but he would have been buying a rolling jack accessory to do any real service work, which would have added cost and complexity. For a hybrid storage-plus-service use case, a two-post is often the better single-unit answer.

Ceiling height and the low-ceiling column question

His ceiling was measured at nine feet six inches under the finished drywall. That is tight for any commercial 2 post car lift with standard twelve-and-a-half-foot columns. It is not, however, out of reach. We have low-ceiling versions of most reputable two-post models that stand at ten feet eight inches, and short-column versions that go as low as ten feet two. The trade-off is lift height. A low-ceiling model gives you about five feet of underside clearance at full raise instead of the standard six-plus. That is still enough for anyone under about six feet three to work under the car comfortably.

The important measurement is not the ceiling on paper but the ceiling under any obstruction. Garage door tracks, ceiling-mount storage racks, and light fixtures all take space. On the Marion install, we identified two garage door opener boxes and a set of overhead track hooks that would have hit the top of the columns. We recommended relocating both before install. Owners always underestimate how much ceiling obstruction they have. Do a walk-around with a broom raised to the height of the intended lift columns before you commit to a 2 post car lift. If the broom hits, so will the lift.

Door swing and the storage-vehicle profile

Door swing is the second common gotcha. A modern insulated overhead door rolls up into the ceiling and takes seven to ten inches of that height with its stacked panels. If a 2 post car lift column sits within a foot of that door track, the door panels will hit the top of the column when they raise. We map the door swing arc onto the layout sketch before we ever set anchor positions. For the Marion garage, we shifted the lift a foot deeper than the buyer originally wanted, which cost him some backup room but saved the entire install from door interference.

The other door consideration is the stored-vehicle profile. If you store a convertible on top and park a daily driver underneath, the two vehicle heights combined have to fit inside the door opening minus safety margin. A typical Miata is forty-eight inches tall. A daily driver sedan is fifty-six inches tall. Add the arm and pad thickness and the necessary safety clearance and you need about eight and a half feet of vertical stack. That fits under a nine-and-a-half-foot ceiling with room to spare. On a 2 post car lift, this stack math is the single most important pre-purchase calculation for a home-garage storage user.

Slab depth and anchor spec for a home garage

The Marion garage slab was six years old, poured to code as a four-inch pad with wire mesh reinforcement. That is workable for a 10K 2 post car lift with standard anchor pattern. The manufacturer we specced called for 3,500 psi concrete and a minimum of four inches, and we verified with a core sample during a pre-install visit. Anchors torqued clean. If your slab is three inches or less, that is a stopper, but we can sometimes cut and re-pour the column footprints as reinforced pads. That costs a couple hundred dollars in materials and a curing day, and it saves the install.

The one thing we do not do is install on cracked or heaving concrete. If the slab shows visible cracks inside the column footprint, or if the garage sits on questionable soil that has settled, we recommend a slab assessment before we quote. That is not fear-mongering, it is engineering. A two-post lift concentrates all its load on two anchor patterns, and the concrete has to hold. Send us photos of your slab, ideally with a coin for scale, and we will tell you honestly whether it can support a commercial-grade 2 post car lift or whether the slab needs work first.

Electrical: 220V single-phase in a home garage

Most modern home garages have a 220V outlet somewhere, usually for a compressor, welder, or EV charger. A 10K 2 post car lift needs a 20 or 30 amp 220V single-phase circuit, depending on the specific motor. In the Marion garage, the buyer had a 220V fifty-amp outlet on the back wall for an EV charger. We wired a subpanel branch off that circuit for the lift and passed inspection cleanly. If you do not have 220V at the wall, an electrician can typically add a circuit from the main panel for a few hundred dollars in materials and a couple hours of labor.

The other electrical consideration is the outlet position relative to the lift column. You want the outlet on the column side of the garage, ideally within about eight feet of the base of the powered column. Running a long extension cord across a garage floor to power a lift is a trip hazard and a code issue. Get the outlet placed correctly the first time. If you are pouring a new slab or wiring a new garage from scratch, place the outlet knowing where the lift will live. Long-term storage: safety cams and hydraulic hold

A 2 post car lift used for long-term storage should always be locked into a mechanical safety cam position. Never leave a vehicle raised on hydraulic pressure alone for weeks or months. Hydraulic seals lose pressure slowly over time, and if a seal weeps overnight the vehicle drifts down. The safety cams are the mechanical stop, and they hold indefinitely. The Marion buyer parks his convertible on the third cam position from full extension all winter and drops it back onto the arms in April. Zero drop, zero problem.

The other storage consideration is arm restraint engagement. Before you leave a vehicle parked on a lift for weeks, verify that all four arm restraints are fully engaged and the cams are set. Then walk under the vehicle and inspect for anything hanging or dripping. If you did a fluid change before storage and there is any weep at a plug, catch it before you leave.
