Decision tree step two: capacity and vehicle mix
Once the bracket is set, we look at the vehicles. Our restoration client works on classic Detroit iron — big-block muscle cars, Lincolns, station wagons — and the heaviest single vehicle in the door was a mid-sixties Cadillac at just over six thousand pounds. We specified a 10,000 pound 2 post car lift because you never buy right at the limit; you buy at 150 percent of your heaviest vehicle. The extra headroom matters when a client rolls in with something unexpected.
The extra headroom matters even more when the vehicle has a transmission in it that adds a few hundred pounds of tooling to the underside. A 12,000 pound lift was on the table for future-proofing, but the arm reach and pad geometry on the 10K unit was a better match to the width and wheelbase of the cars they actually service. We do not upsell capacity buyers do not need. We match the equipment to the work, then leave headroom for the unusual jobs that will inevitably appear.
Decision tree step three: symmetric vs asymmetric configuration
The choice between symmetric and asymmetric is the second-most-common question we get, and it depends entirely on what the technician does under the vehicle. For transmission work, which was the driving use case for our client, asymmetric is usually the right call because it rotates the vehicle roughly thirty degrees relative to the posts, opening the driver-side door for entry after the vehicle is up. Symmetric puts the center of gravity dead between the posts and is preferred for tire, brake, and general chassis work where door access is not the priority.

Different jobs, different geometry, one shop. For a single-bay operation, we typically recommend asymmetric because it covers the widest range of shop work with the fewest compromises. Overhead vs baseplate: ceiling height decides
Ceiling height decides overhead versus baseplate before any other factor. The restoration shop had 12-foot clear ceilings, so an overhead-style two-post was the obvious pick — the top beam clears easily, the equalizer cables live above your head instead of underfoot, and the shop stays clean. Baseplate two-posts are the answer for shops with 10 to 11 foot ceilings or with I-beams and lighting in the way, but they require a floor plate between the posts that some technicians dislike because it becomes a trip hazard and a place for shop debris to collect.
When a customer calls and describes their building, ceiling clearance is the first question we ask before recommending any specific model. Get that wrong and no other spec matters.
