An overlanding builder in east-central Iowa called us in the fall because his shop had grown from a hobby to a licensed inspection station, and his hydraulic post lift borrowed from a friend was no longer cutting it. He was doing annual state inspections on lifted Tacomas, Wranglers, and 4Runners, plus his own build customers were hauling in Land Cruisers and F-250 Tremor packages. He needed a real 2 post car lift, and he needed to decide between an overhead and a baseplate configuration for a bay that has a 12-foot 6-inch ceiling and a habit of trucks that already sit tall. Why ceiling height is the whole conversation
The customer’s shop had a truss height of exactly 12 feet 6 inches at the lowest point. A standard overhead 2 post car lift with the padded shutoff bar wants roughly 12 feet clear at the beam, and once you factor in a lifted Tacoma with a roof rack, you are asking for the roof-line to clear the overhead beam at full extension. That math almost never works for overlanders.
We measured his tallest customer vehicle at 82 inches with rack. The overhead beam on the lift he was considering would have hit that rack before the tires cleared the floor to inspection height. That single measurement, taken with a laser and written on the quote, moved him to a baseplate 2 post car lift and saved him from an ugly surprise on install day.
Baseplate 2 post car lift, the honest tradeoff
Baseplate lifts route the equalizer cables and hydraulic hoses through a low crossover between the columns. You lose the padded overhead shutoff bar. In exchange you get roughly two extra feet of unobstructed vertical clearance, and you can lift a jacked-up half-ton with a bed rack and still shut the arms down onto the pads.
The tradeoff to explain to any 2 post car lift buyer is that a rolling floor jack, a transmission jack, or a heavy dolly will bump the crossover if you are not paying attention. It becomes muscle memory in a week. Our overlander customer said it took him two days to stop tripping over the crossover, and he has not thought about it since. For his ceiling, this was the right call.
Annual state inspection workflow on a 2 post car lift
Iowa’s annual state inspection routine for overlander customers is heavier than a stock passenger car. He is checking ball joints, tie rods, control-arm bushings, sway-bar links, brake components, and often verifying lift-kit installation is safe and torqued. A 2 post car lift lets him get all four wheels off the ground and swing every joint by hand, which is impossible on a scissor lift or ramps.
We spec’d him a 12,000 lb symmetric with heavy-duty three-stage arms. The extra capacity keeps the lift out of its stress zone on a fully-armored Land Cruiser, and the arms reach the awkward pinch-weld locations on a Tacoma with body armor. His annual inspection throughput doubled inside a month, because he stopped fighting the lift on every rig.
Concrete for a shop that pounds the floor
Overlanders drop tires, roll winch bumpers, and drag lockers across the shop floor. His slab was a nice five inches of newer 4,000 psi concrete, well within the spec for a 2 post car lift. We still added rubber lug pads under each column baseplate and torqued anchors to the wet spec because his shop humidity in winter runs high.
If your slab is questionable, do not skip the coring test. A 2 post car lift will telegraph a marginal slab through anchor pullout inside a year, and the fix at that point is far more expensive than pouring correctly the first time. We include a concrete verification step on every Iowa install we do, and we would rather delay a job by a week than install onto a slab that will fail.
Arms, pads, and the lifted-truck pinch weld problem
Stock pickups have pinch welds at documented lift points that most 2 post car lift arms reach with default pad heights. Lifted trucks push those points up by two to six inches, and body-mount lifts push them further. He needed adjustable stack pads with 3, 6, and 9-inch adapters, and dedicated frame cradle pads for aluminum-frame customers.
We shipped him a full pad kit with the lift. That kit is what turns a generic 2 post car lift into an inspection-ready overlanding bay. Buying a lift without the right pads is like buying a torque wrench without sockets, and it is a mistake we watch new shops make almost weekly.
Case-study numbers he tracked
He gave us the six-month numbers. Inspections up from about twelve a month to twenty-eight. Build-in-progress vehicles moving through his shop faster because he could get under one while working on top of another. Zero incidents. Zero warranty claims on the 2 post car lift. Two service calls, both scheduled, both for routine cable pre-stretch check.
That case is repeatable. If you are running an inspection station for an overlander crowd in Iowa, a properly-sized baseplate the lift is almost always the right answer for a mid-ceiling shop. The exceptions are large steel buildings with 14 feet of clear ceiling; those get overhead, always, because you never regret the shutoff bar.

Four questions before you buy. What is your truss height at the lowest point above where the columns will sit. What is the tallest vehicle you routinely see, roof rack included. What is your slab thickness and cure age. What voltage and amperage do you have available within ten feet of the power column.
