When an EV specialty shop in Waterloo called us about buying a 2 post car lift for their new CV axle and half-shaft bay, the first thing they asked was whether we handled the freight or if they were on their own. That question is the reason we wrote this article. Half the myths we hear about buying a 2 post car lift in Iowa come from bad assumptions about how the equipment actually shows up at your door. The Waterloo EV shop story
The shop had bought a used lift five years ago off a Facebook Marketplace ad and moved it themselves with a rented forklift and a lot of profanity. They swore they would never do that again. Now they were expanding into EV half-shaft work, adding a second bay, and they wanted the new 2 post car lift to be a professional experience from the first phone call to the first vehicle in the air. Fair enough.
Here is what we told them, and what surprised them. A commercial 2 post car lift ships from the manufacturer as roughly one to two crates and a bundle. Total shipping weight lands between 1,900 and 2,600 pounds. It arrives on a common carrier LTL truck. That truck is not going to lift it off with a liftgate for you, because most commercial lifts exceed liftgate ratings. Someone at the receiving end has to have a forklift, a telehandler, or a plan. When we coordinate a delivery in Waterloo, we make sure that plan exists before the truck leaves the terminal.
Myth 1 — the freight company will unload it for you
They will not. LTL carriers deliver curbside on their schedule, and if you do not have unloading capacity, they will refuse the drop and reroute the freight back to the terminal, sometimes with storage fees stacking up daily. That is one of the most expensive mistakes a first-time buyer of a 2 post car lift can make. We have watched shops eat two or three days of billing because their forklift was down and the crate was sitting on the truck.

Myth 2 — you need a huge forklift or you cannot take delivery

Keep the load close to the ground until you are next to the install pad.
Myth 3 — every 2 post car lift arrives in a single neat crate
Some do, most do not. Depending on the manufacturer, you may see one wooden crate holding the columns and beam, plus a separate carton or two of arms, restraints, and hardware. Check the packing list before the driver leaves. If a carton is missing, note it on the bill of lading. Once the driver is gone and you have signed for a clean delivery, missing hardware becomes your problem, not the carrier’s problem.
We include a printed inspection sheet with every 2 post car lift we ship. It lists exactly what should be on the pallet, so the receiver can walk around the crate and check off each item in five minutes. That habit has saved several shops the aggravation of chasing a missing arm restraint kit for three weeks while their new bay sits idle.
Why CV axle and EV half-shaft work drives lift choice
EV half-shafts are heavier than their internal-combustion counterparts because of the torque loads they carry. Working on them means the tech is under the vehicle with a torque wrench at full extension. A 2 post car lift puts the vehicle at the height where that job is a standing job instead of a crawling job. That single fact is why the Waterloo shop chose a 2 post car lift over a mid-rise for their half-shaft bay.

What we do differently when we ship to Waterloo
Every Cedar Valley delivery gets a phone call from us the day before, not the morning of. We confirm the receiving contact, the forklift status, the yard access, and the install crew ETA if we are doing the anchor work. We also confirm the concrete has been verified at four inches minimum with 3,000 PSI, because a the lift anchored into a thin slab is a lawsuit waiting to happen and we do not install one.
If the shop is doing the install themselves, we email the anchor pattern PDF and the plumb-and-level sequence a week before. Most first-time installers do not realize that the columns have to be plumb within a quarter inch over their full height. Get that wrong on install day and you will chase carriage travel problems for the life of the lift.
A short pre-order checklist
Before you sign a purchase order for any the lift, run this five-item list. First, measure the ceiling height at the exact spot the lift will sit, not the peak of the roof. Second, confirm the concrete slab is at least four inches, 3,000 PSI. Third, confirm 220-volt single-phase power within twenty feet, or plan for a run. Fourth, confirm forklift access on delivery day. Fifth, confirm the columns will fit through your overhead door on the way in.
That last one has bitten more people than you would think. We had a Grundy County shop order a the lift and realize on delivery day the columns were three inches longer than their door opening.
