A 2 post lift home garage project usually starts with one question and ends with a completely different one. The first question is “how much does the lift cost?” The second, and the one that actually determines whether the install happens, is “is my slab thick enough?” We talked with a quick-lube franchise operator expanding into a personal shop building in northern Missouri who wanted a straight cost breakdown from the lift itself through concrete work and install labor, because his existing bay was doing brake service and rotor swaps on a slab that had never been engineered for a lift. That conversation is worth walking through in detail.

What a 2 post lift home garage build actually costs, piece by piece

When people ask for a single number, we break it into three buckets: the lift itself, concrete work if the slab needs it, and installation labor. A capable 9,000 to 10,000 lb asymmetric 2 post lift for a home garage typically lands in the low-to-mid thousands of dollars for the equipment alone, depending on brand, height, and control style. That’s before delivery, before concrete, before install. For someone doing brake service and rotor swaps rather than heavy engine work, a 9,000 lb unit is usually plenty of capacity and keeps the price down compared to a 12,000 lb commercial-grade unit.

Concrete is where the number swings the most, and it’s the part most people underestimate. If the existing slab is thin, cracked, or unknown-spec, you’re either coring test samples, cutting and repouring a pad, or accepting a shorter anchor bolt embedment and reduced load rating. Install labor for a straight-forward 2 post lift home garage job, on a slab that’s already adequate, runs a modest flat rate for a half-day crew. Add a new pour or reinforced pad and you’re adding real time and material cost on top. That’s why we always ask about the slab before we ever quote the lift.

Why concrete slab thickness makes or breaks the install

Every 2 post lift, ours included, has a minimum concrete spec from the manufacturer — typically 4 inches of properly cured, unreinforced concrete rated at 3,000 PSI or better, with more required for taller lift columns or higher weight capacities. A quick-lube bay slab poured decades ago for foot traffic and hydraulic jacks was never designed to hold four anchor bolts carrying the entire weight of a lift and a raised vehicle on two columns. That’s a completely different load path than a flat drive-over floor.

We test existing slabs before we quote anchors, because guessing here is how lifts fail. If the slab is under 4 inches or the concrete is old and crumbly at the surface, we recommend cutting a pad specifically for the columns — usually a 4 to 6 foot square, 5 to 6 inches thick, with rebar or wire mesh reinforcement, doweled into the surrounding floor. This is a fraction of the cost of repouring an entire bay and it gets you a code-compliant, warranty-eligible install. Skipping this step to save money up front is the single most common reason we get called out for lift anchor failures later, and by then the repair costs far more than doing it right at install.

Rebar, wire mesh, and what actually matters underneath a 2 post lift

Rebar and wire mesh don’t add compressive strength to concrete — concrete’s compressive strength comes from the mix and cure. What reinforcement does is control cracking and hold the slab together under the lateral and point loads a 2 post lift puts on it. For a 2 post lift home garage pad, we generally spec a grid of rebar tied at 12 to 16 inch intervals, or 6×6 wire mesh at minimum, sitting mid-depth in the pour, never resting on the sub-base.

The sub-base matters just as much as the reinforcement. Four to six inches of compacted gravel underneath the new pad prevents settling, which is what eventually causes anchor bolts to loosen and lift columns to lean out of plumb over years of use. We’ve walked into home garages where a previous owner poured a beautiful, well-reinforced pad directly onto native soil with no compaction, and five years later the whole thing had shifted enough that the lift needed to be re-anchored from scratch. Get the sub-base right and the rebar work you’re paying for actually does its job for the life of the lift.

Install labor: what you’re actually paying for

Installation on a 2 post lift home garage job covers more than bolting columns to the floor. Our crews check floor flatness and level across the full footprint, verify overhead clearance against the lift’s fully-raised height, torque anchor bolts to spec, route and test hydraulic hoses or cables, and run a full cycle test with a load before we sign off. Skipping any one of these steps is how a DIY install ends up as an insurance liability instead of a working lift.

For a straightforward slab that passes inspection, install typically takes a half day to a full day with a two-person crew. Add a concrete pad and you’re looking at a multi-day project once you factor in cure time before the lift can be loaded — often 5 to 7 days minimum for a structural pad to reach usable strength, longer for full cure. Anyone quoting a same-day pour-and-install on a home garage lift pad is cutting corners on cure time, and that’s exactly the kind of shortcut that leads to the failures we get called to fix.

Choosing the right lift capacity for brake and rotor work

Not every 2 post lift home garage buyer needs the same capacity, and matching the lift to the actual use case saves real money. Someone doing brake service and rotor swaps on daily-driver sedans and light trucks is well served by a 9,000 lb asymmetric lift — plenty of capacity with room to spare, and a lower price point than heavier-duty units. If there’s any chance of servicing a heavier pickup, a diesel dually, or a work van down the line, stepping up to 10,000 or 12,000 lbs buys margin for very little extra cost.
