Before a 4 post car hoist ever touches the floor of your shop, there’s a site survey that either sets the whole install up to succeed or quietly guarantees problems down the road. We recently walked a tire and alignment shop owner near Sioux City through exactly this process for a bay dedicated to brake service and rotor swaps, and the questions we asked before quoting anything are the same ones every shop owner should be asking before committing to a 4 post car hoist. Why a proper site survey comes before the 4 post car hoist quote

A lot of shop owners want a price first and a survey later, but with a 4 post car hoist that order causes real problems. The ceiling height, floor condition, and bay footprint all constrain which model and which options actually fit — quoting blind means either re-quoting later or, worse, installing something that doesn’t work and finding out after the fact. For the Sioux City shop, we started with ceiling height and slab condition before we ever talked model numbers, because those two facts alone eliminate a chunk of the catalog immediately.

A brake and rotor bay has its own quirks that a generic quote misses too. You need clearance to swing a rotor off the hub, room for an impact gun and torque wrench to move freely around all four corners, and enough runway width that a tech isn’t working in a cramped stance for an eight-hour shift. We built the survey around those realities rather than a one-size questionnaire, and that’s the difference between a 4 post car hoist that fits the shop and one that just fits in the shop.

Concrete thickness, rebar, and slab condition

The single most common install-killer we run into is floor condition, and it’s the first thing we check on every site visit. A 4 post car hoist concentrates significant load into four post footprints, and a thin or unreinforced slab simply can’t take that load safely over time — cracking, anchor pull-out, and settling are all real risks on marginal concrete. We ask for slab thickness and whether there’s rebar before we even discuss which lift model makes sense, because a four-inch unreinforced floor and a six-inch reinforced floor can lead to two completely different recommendations.

For shops with infloor heat, this gets even more important, since heat lines run through the slab and anchor placement has to avoid them entirely. We’ve had installs where we shifted a runway position by a foot or more specifically to dodge a heat loop, and that’s a much easier conversation to have during a site survey than after anchors are already going into concrete. If you don’t know your slab thickness offhand, that’s fine — it’s exactly what the survey is for, and it’s worth confirming before you fall in love with a specific 4 post car hoist model.

Ceiling height and overhead clearance for full-height lifts

Ceiling height sets a hard ceiling, literally, on what 4 post car hoist you can run, and it’s the second thing we confirm on every survey. You need enough clearance for the vehicle at full lift height plus the lift’s own mechanism and any overhead obstructions — lighting, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, door tracks. A shop with sixteen-foot ceilings has a lot of flexibility; a shop with ten or eleven feet needs a careful measurement against the specific model’s rise height before anything gets ordered.

We also check for anything mounted overhead that a raised vehicle or a raised rolling jack might contact, which gets missed more often than you’d think in shops that have added shelving, lighting, or ductwork since the building was designed. For a brake and rotor bay specifically, techs often need to walk fully upright around the vehicle at full height, so we build in margin beyond the bare minimum clearance number rather than cutting it exactly to spec. That margin is cheap during planning and expensive to fix after installation.

Bay width, approach lanes, and safe walk-around space

A 4 post car hoist needs more than just the runway footprint — it needs safe space to approach, exit, and walk fully around the vehicle while it’s elevated. For the Sioux City shop we measured out not just where the lift itself would sit, but the full approach lane for driving a vehicle onto the runways without a multi-point turn, plus at least a few feet of clearance on all sides for tool carts and foot traffic. Brake work in particular means techs moving constantly between all four corners, so a bay that’s technically wide enough but leaves no walking room creates a daily safety compromise.

We also look at how a second vehicle stages while the first is on the lift, since most shops can’t afford dead time waiting for one bay to clear. Planning that traffic flow during the survey — where cars queue, where the tech’s cart lives, where hoses or air lines run — avoids the kind of layout regret that shows up six months after a 4 post car hoist installation when everyone’s tripping over each other. Get the spatial plan right before delivery, not after.

Weight rating for a brake and tire service mix

Brake and rotor shops tend to see a wide vehicle mix — commuter sedans one hour, half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks the next — and the 4 post car hoist has to be rated for the heaviest realistic vehicle plus whatever rolling jack or equipment load rides on the platform during service. We walked through the Sioux City shop’s actual customer mix rather than guessing, because a rating that only covers passenger cars becomes a real limitation the first time a heavier truck needs brake work.

This is also where the rolling jack conversation comes in — for rotor swaps you need a jack that rolls between the runways to lift a corner once the vehicle’s already up, and that jack’s rated capacity needs to match the wheel-corner weight of the heaviest vehicle in your mix. Sizing the platform and the rolling jack together, rather than as separate afterthoughts, is a step we build into every site survey specifically because it gets skipped so often elsewhere.

Electrical, hydraulic, and utility access at the install site

Power and hydraulic setup for a 4 post car hoist isn’t complicated, but it does need planning before install day. Most models run on standard shop electrical service, but the outlet or disconnect location needs to be within reasonable reach of where the lift’s power unit will actually sit, and that’s a detail we confirm during the site survey rather than leaving for the install crew to improvise around. For the Sioux City bay, that meant checking existing panel capacity and outlet placement against the planned lift position before finalizing the layout.

We also check floor drains, existing air lines, and any other utility runs that might cross the planned runway or post footprint, since rerouting those after a the lift is already anchored is a much bigger job than planning around them first. A thorough survey catches these conflicts on paper instead of during installation, which keeps the project on schedule and avoids surprise costs once the crew is already on site with the equipment.

Every piece of this survey — slab condition, ceiling height, bay width, weight mix, and utility access — exists to protect the same thing: a safe, functional the lift install that does the job you actually need for years, not just on delivery day. Skipping any one of these steps doesn’t usually blow up the install immediately; it shows up later as a cracked anchor point, a clearance you didn’t account for, or a rated capacity you’ve quietly exceeded without realizing it.
