Most quick-lube shops assume they need a heavier commercial lift, but a 9000 lb car lift covers the overwhelming majority of what rolls through a Council Bluffs bay: half-ton pickups, three-row SUVs, minivans, and every sedan and crossover in between. Go much lighter and you’re turning away the F-150s and Suburbans that make up a big share of differential and transfer case service work. Asymmetric Arms: Better Door Swing, Slightly Higher Cost

Asymmetric arm lifts shift the columns rearward and offset the front arms so the vehicle sits closer to the front columns and further from the rear ones. That gives full door swing on both front doors even with the vehicle raised, which matters a lot if your techs are hopping in and out to check parking brakes, shift linkage, or interior components during a diff or transmission service. Most commercial quick-lube bays we outfit end up choosing asymmetric for this reason alone.

The cost difference between symmetric and asymmetric versions of the same 9000 lb car lift is usually modest — a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand — and it’s almost always worth it for a multi-bay operation seeing high vehicle turnover. If your bay only ever does driveline and underbody work with no need to access the cabin while raised, symmetric will save you a bit and function just as well.
