Why This Iowa Builder Needed a 9000 lb Car Lift

The customer’s truck wasn’t a stock half-ton. Between the winch bumper, skid plates, long-travel suspension, and a bed full of recovery gear, he was routinely pushing close to 8,000 lbs curb weight, and he wanted headroom for future builds too. A 7,000 lb lift would have been cutting it close on paper and uncomfortably close in real life, especially with the weight bias that off-road rigs carry up front. Wheel bearing work was the specific job driving the purchase. We specced this build with asymmetric arms up front to swing clear of the door for cab access, and symmetric-style reach in back to give clean space under the rear axle and driveline components. The goal was simple: get the truck up, get the wheel off, and have zero lift structure in the way of the hub, knuckle, or driveshaft.

We also talked through drive-through clearance, since he sometimes needs to pull a trailer or a second vehicle through the bay while the truck’s up on the lift. A two-post design with overhead-free columns, or at least a straight drive-through path, made more sense for his layout than a four-post runway would have. Little decisions like arm style and column placement don’t show up on a spec sheet the same way capacity does, but they’re what make a shop day-to-day efficient instead of frustrating.

Installation Timeline and What to Expect

Once the new pad was poured and cured, our crew was in and out in a single day for the lift install itself, but the full project — from initial site visit to first vehicle on the lift — ran about three weeks because of the concrete work. That’s a realistic timeline for anyone in Iowa who discovers mid-process that their slab needs attention. We’d rather tell a customer upfront that they’re looking at a few extra weeks than rush an anchor job into concrete that isn’t ready.

During the install, we also checked ceiling height, electrical service for the power unit, and swept the bay layout one more time before final positioning.
