Every restoration hobbyist we talk to near the border thinks about clearance to the vehicle first and forgets clearance above it. An a0436 setup, like most two-post and four-post configurations, needs enough overhead room not just for the arms and carriage at full rise, but for the vehicle itself once it’s up in the air. A raised truck or a project car with a roof rack sitting on top changes your math fast. We ask every caller for their actual measured ceiling height at the exact spot the posts will sit — not the tallest point of a pole barn with a pitched roof, but the real number above the columns.
Metal fabrication work makes this worse because you’re often running an overhead crane, a cherry picker, or ductwork for a welding exhaust system in that same airspace. We’ve had customers in older pole barns along the border who had eleven feet of clearance on paper but only nine feet once you accounted for a support beam running the wrong direction. Before you finalize anything, measure twice, note any obstructions, and send us the number.
