Overhead Two-Post Lifts: Pros for Brake and Rotor Work

The overhead beam ties the columns together at the top, which means the lift doesn’t rely as heavily on a perfect floor pour for stability — a real advantage in older buildings. For rotor swaps specifically, the open wheel access on an overhead two-post design lets you pull wheels, calipers, and rotors without fighting arm placement, since the arms sit lower and the columns are set wider at typical drive-through spacing.

The tradeoff is ceiling clearance. If your shop has 12-foot ceilings or lower, or if you’re running tall diesel pickups with light bars and roof racks, the overhead beam can force awkward positioning or limit how high you can safely raise certain vehicles. The catch with baseplate lifts is floor requirements. These units need a thicker, properly cured concrete slab — typically a minimum of four to six inches of quality concrete, depending on the model and capacity — because all the structural load transfers through the baseplate into the floor rather than being shared with an overhead tie. If you’re building a new shop or repouring a bay, baseplate is often the better long-term choice. If you’re retrofitting into an existing ag building with an unknown or older slab, we’ll want to see core samples or at minimum a visual inspection before recommending one, because an undersized floor under a baseplate lift is a safety problem, not a minor inconvenience.

Positioning Your AC1234 9 Machine Around Either Lift Type

We test floor conditions before every install, and we won’t anchor a baseplate lift into a slab we haven’t verified, because a callback on a safety-rated lift is a conversation we’d rather not have.

The same standard applies to your A/C equipment hookup. If the the lift unit isn’t wired to the right circuit or vented correctly, you’ll see performance issues that get blamed on the machine when the real problem is the install.
