Four-Post Cable Systems: A Different Wear Pattern

A four-post configuration used as a car maintenance lift often gets chosen by fleets that want to store a vehicle on the platform while working underneath another one on the ground — a setup we quoted for a shop building out a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls. The cable system on a four-post lift equalizes the platform runways rather than individual arms, so the wear pattern is different: less impact loading from suspension work, but more constant tension from full-time vehicle storage.

Because four-post platforms often sit loaded for days or weeks at a time rather than just during a service cycle, the cables experience sustained tension rather than repeated shock loading. That means inspection can stretch to every 60-90 days for light-duty fleet use, but if you’re using rollerjacks or doing brake and suspension work on the ground-level vehicle while the stored car sits up top, don’t skip the check just because the top vehicle isn’t the one being serviced. We’ve found four-post cable failures are less frequent but more dramatic when they happen, since the platform is often carrying a stored vehicle unattended.

Two-post systems used heavily for suspension and shock work need visual checks monthly and hands-on inspection quarterly, tightening to bi-monthly if volume is high. Four-post systems used primarily for storage-plus-maintenance can run on a quarterly hands-on schedule, but any car maintenance lift with cables older than five years should move to monthly checks regardless of configuration, since wire rope fatigue accelerates non-linearly near end of life.

We also tell fleet operators to log every inspection with a date and a tech’s initials on a tag near the power unit. It sounds like paperwork busywork until an insurance adjuster or OSHA inspector asks for it. Fleets running multiple bays with different configurations benefit from standardizing the interval across all lifts to the shorter of the two schedules — it’s simpler to train new techs on one rule than two.

Why Suspension and Shock Work Is Harder on Equipment

Suspension and shock replacement puts more dynamic load on a lift than routine oil changes or tire rotations. Impact wrenches, spring compressors, and the sudden release of tension when a strut assembly comes free all transmit force through the vehicle and into the lift’s arms, carriages, and ultimately the cables. A car maintenance lift rated for 7,000 pounds static capacity isn’t necessarily rated for the repeated shock loading of heavy suspension work at that same weight class.

A shop doing mostly oil changes and inspections can run a lighter-duty two-post setup with longer cable intervals. A shop doing daily strut and shock work should budget for shorter inspection cycles and factor cable replacement into annual maintenance costs rather than treating it as a surprise repair.
