If you run a small fleet shop anywhere along the Iowa-Missouri border, you already know that a forward four post lift changes how many jobs you can run at once. We get calls every month from fleet operators who are stuck between two bay layouts and want to know which one actually saves labor hours on CV axle and half-shaft replacement. Configuration One: Straight-In, Single-Bay Runway

The first layout is the one most small fleets already have without thinking about it — a single forward four post lift dropped straight into one bay, nose facing the door, with no room to spare on either side. It works fine if your fleet is mostly light-duty vans and pickups and your techs are doing one vehicle at a time. On CV axle and half-shaft jobs, this layout gets the vehicle up in the air fast, but the tech ends up walking around the vehicle more than necessary because tool carts and axle presses have to sit behind the lift, not beside it.

We’ve measured this in shops on both sides of the border: a straight-in single bay adds roughly ten to fifteen minutes per half-shaft job just in walking and repositioning, compared to a layout built around workflow. It’s not a bad setup — plenty of one- or two-truck fleets run this way for years without issue. But if you’re doing three or more axle jobs a week, that lost time adds up to a full extra job you could have squeezed into the week. The advantage is cost and simplicity: one forward four post lift, one straight approach, minimal training for new techs.

Configuration Two: Offset Twin-Bay With Shared Tool Zone

The second configuration is what we now recommend to most fleet operators we work with near the Iowa-Missouri line: two forward four post lift units set at a slight offset, angled toward a shared tool and parts zone in the middle of the bay. This puts the axle press, torque equipment, and half-shaft fixtures within arm’s reach of both lifts instead of stashed behind one of them. Techs working CV axle jobs on either vehicle can grab the same tooling without crossing the shop floor.

The tradeoff is footprint — this layout needs a wider bay, and not every fleet garage has the extra ten to twelve feet to spare. But for shops running four or more vehicles through service in a week, the time savings are real. We’ve had fleet customers tell us they cut their axle-job turnaround by nearly a third just from tooling being centralized. If your shop is planning a remodel or a new build anyway, this is the layout to design around rather than retrofit later.

Why CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work Favors Forward Four Post Lifts

Ball joint and axle work rewards a runway-style lift because the vehicle stays supported at the frame or the pinch points the whole time, and the wheels hang free the moment you need them to. A forward four post lift gives your tech full underside access without disturbing ride height or suspension geometry mid-job, which matters when you’re pulling a half-shaft and don’t want the vehicle settling unevenly on you. Compare that to a two post lift, where the arms can sometimes interfere with axle removal angles on certain trucks and vans.

Fleet techs also appreciate that a forward four post lift doubles as a rolling-jack platform when you add optional jacks between the runways — so a CV axle swap that also needs a tire off can happen without re-chaining the vehicle to a different lift. For fleets running mixed vehicle types, from light pickups to cargo vans, that flexibility means one piece of equipment covers more of your daily workload than a comparable two post setup.

Weight Capacity Planning for Mixed Fleets

Small fleets near the border rarely run identical vehicles. We talk to operators who have everything from half-ton pickups to medium-duty box trucks on the same lot, and that mix determines the capacity you actually need. A 10,000 lb forward four post lift covers most light and medium fleet vehicles, but if there’s any chance a heavier truck rotates through your bay, it’s worth sizing up to a 14,000 lb model rather than guessing low and regretting it later.

We always tell fleet operators to list every vehicle that might ever sit on the lift, not just the ones you own today. Fleets change composition every couple of years, and a forward four post lift is not something you want to replace because you underbought capacity by a few thousand pounds. It’s cheaper to buy the right size once than to discover mid-job that your heaviest van is right at the edge of the rated limit.

Runway Length and Approach Ramps for Axle Work

Runway length matters more for CV axle and half-shaft jobs than most shops expect, because you need enough clearance in front of and behind the vehicle to pull axles out fully without the tech working in a cramped corner. Shorter runways save floor space but can force awkward body positions during axle removal, which slows the job and increases the chance of a dropped part or a stripped bolt from working at a bad angle.

Approach ramp angle is the other piece people overlook. A forward four post lift with a gentler ramp angle is easier to drive vehicles onto without scraping low front bumpers, which is common on lowered fleet vans and some pickup trims. We spec ramp angle based on the lowest-clearance vehicle in a fleet’s lineup, not the average one, because that’s the vehicle that will cause a problem if you guess wrong.

Storage and Alignment Add-Ons Worth Considering

Many fleets buying a forward four post lift for axle work also ask about alignment capability down the road, even if they’re not doing alignments today. Adding turn plates and slip plates later is possible on most models, but it’s far easier to plan bay spacing and utility runs for that upgrade now than to retrofit a finished bay in two years. If there’s any chance your fleet will bring alignment work in-house, mention it before installation, not after.

Storage jacks and rolling bridge jacks are the other common add-on, and they matter directly for CV axle work because they let a tech lift a corner of the vehicle without dropping the whole runway. That means faster tire-off access during axle jobs and less waiting around for the full lift to cycle. It’s a relatively small add-on cost compared to the lift itself, but it pays back quickly in shops doing frequent axle and brake work side by side.
