What Overhead vs Baseplate Actually Means for a Forward Lift

A forward lift comes in two basic structural styles: overhead (the cross beam that ties the two columns together runs above the vehicle, near ceiling height) and baseplate (the columns are tied together by a beam running along the floor). Both styles do the same job — lifting a car or truck by the frame or pinch welds — but they demand very different things from your garage. Overhead configurations need real ceiling height, usually 12 feet or more depending on the lift’s rise, because the beam and the vehicle both have to clear it at full extension.

Baseplate forward lifts trade that ceiling requirement for a floor-level obstruction. The beam running between the columns sits a few inches off the slab, which means you’ll be stepping over it constantly and it can complicate rolling floor jacks or creepers under the vehicle during frame and metal work. For restoration shops doing extensive underbody work, that baseplate beam is often the deciding factor against buying one, even in garages with plenty of ceiling height to spare. We walk every hobbyist through both styles before quoting so nobody spends money on the wrong footprint.

Ceiling Height and Beam Clearance

Before you even look at brochures, measure your garage from slab to the lowest ceiling obstruction — not just the trusses, but any ductwork, garage door tracks, or light fixtures. An overhead forward lift needs clearance for the beam itself plus the tallest vehicle you’ll ever lift on it, at full rise. Most residential two-post lifts top out around 12 to 14 feet of overall height when fully extended, and if your garage has an 8 or 9-foot ceiling, overhead configurations are off the table entirely.

This is where a lot of Ames hobbyists get surprised. A garage that looks tall enough with the door open often has a beam or header running lower than expected right where the lift needs to sit. We’ve measured garages that looked like easy overhead installs on paper and found a furnace duct running exactly where the crossbar needed clearance. If your ceiling can’t handle overhead, a baseplate forward lift becomes the practical answer, and we’ll spec the anchoring and floor thickness requirements around that instead.

Baseplate Footprint and Slab Requirements

Baseplate models solve the ceiling problem but introduce a different set of concerns: floor thickness and flatness. Because the entire load path runs through a floor-level beam and anchor bolts into the slab, you need a minimum concrete thickness — typically 4 inches of properly cured, unreinforced-crack-free slab — for the anchors to hold under real load. Older Iowa garage slabs, especially ones poured decades ago, sometimes don’t meet that thickness or have expansion joints running right through the anchor pattern.

We always core-check or ask for pour documentation before installing a baseplate forward lift on an older slab. If the floor doesn’t check out, that’s not the end of the road — we can often recommend a different anchor pattern or a modest concrete patch rather than a full slab replacement. The other baseplate consideration is the beam itself sitting on the floor: for restoration work where you’re constantly sliding parts, dollies, and rolling stands underneath the car, that beam becomes a tripping hazard and a workflow interruption you’ll deal with every single session.

Vehicle Compatibility for Restoration Projects

Restoration and metal work vehicles are often lower, older, and less standardized than daily drivers, which matters a lot when you’re picking lift points. Classic cars frequently have thinner rocker panels, non-standard frame rails, or missing factory lift points entirely. A forward lift’s arms need enough range to reach factory-appropriate pickup points without the vehicle rocking or the arms bottoming out against the frame.

We’ve fit lifts for hobbyists restoring everything from muscle cars to vintage trucks, and the arm reach and adjustable pad height matter more on these projects than on a modern SUV with clearly marked lift points. If you’re planning to work on multiple different vehicles over the years — which most restoration hobbyists do — look for a forward lift with generous arm sweep and pad adjustment range so you’re not fighting the equipment every time you swap projects. This is also where overhead configurations sometimes win, since the columns are set wider and don’t interfere with low-slung project cars the way a floor beam can.

Door Swing and Column Placement

Garage doors and forward lift columns have to coexist, and this trips up more hobbyist installs than almost anything else. If your columns are placed too close to the door opening, a raised vehicle’s doors won’t clear the columns when you try to get in or out at full lift height — which matters a lot if you’re working solo and need to climb in and out during a project. We map column placement against your specific vehicle’s door swing radius before finalizing any layout, not just against a generic spec sheet.

This also affects where you can park the lift relative to your garage door track and any side-mounted shelving or workbenches. A few extra inches of planning up front saves you from discovering, after the concrete is drilled, that you can’t fully open a door on one side. Power, Air, and Utility Runs

Most the lifts run on 220-volt single phase power for the hydraulic pump, and baseplate models sometimes need conduit run along the floor beam path rather than up a wall, depending on where your electrical panel sits. If you’re retrofitting an existing garage, this can mean an electrician trenching a small channel in the slab or running surface conduit that has to route around the beam.

Overhead configurations are usually simpler here since the columns are vertical and power typically runs up one column from a nearby outlet or panel. If your garage doesn’t already have 220V service, factor that electrical work into your total budget before you commit to a lift style — we’ve seen hobbyists budget carefully for the lift itself and get surprised by an electrician’s quote to add the circuit. Getting the Right Fit Before You Buy

The cheapest way to avoid a the lift mistake is a phone call before you order anything. We ask every hobbyist customer for ceiling height, slab age and thickness if known, garage door dimensions, and the types of vehicles they plan to work on. That’s usually enough for us to steer you toward overhead or baseplate and flag any red flags before money changes hands.
