We got called out to a shop in southeast Iowa that builds and services off-road and overlanding rigs, and their two-post forward lift i10 had thrown up a red flag during its state inspection cycle. The shop and the problem

This particular shop specializes in lifted trucks, overland builds, and heavy suspension work — the kind of vehicles that get raised, dropped, raised again, and left hanging on arms for hours while someone welds a skid plate or swaps out a lift kit. Their forward lift i10 had been in service for several years and had done exactly the kind of hard, repetitive-cycle work that wears out safety hardware faster than a typical oil-change bay. When their inspection came due, the tech flagged inconsistent engagement on one of the four arm restraint latches and asked them to have it serviced before re-inspection.

That’s a common story for us in southeast Iowa. Shops that run heavier, taller vehicles put more stress on the arm restraint mechanism because the arms are extended further and held at odd angles more often than on a lift servicing only sedans and light trucks. The restraint pins and cam surfaces on a forward lift i10 are precision parts, and once they wear even slightly out of spec, the lock can appear to catch while not fully seating. An inspector catching that early is a good thing — it’s a lot better than finding out the hard way with a vehicle on the ground.

Three of the four caught cleanly with an audible, solid click. The fourth was engaging late and with noticeably less resistance — the kind of thing an operator might not notice in daily use but that shows up immediately once you’re looking for it. On teardown, we found the safety-cam surface had worn down just enough to change the geometry of the catch, likely from years of loaded cycling under heavier-than-average vehicles.

We also checked the return spring tension on that arm, since a weak spring can cause the same symptom — a cam that technically reaches the latch but doesn’t seat with authority. In this case it was genuinely worn hardware, not a spring issue, but we always check both because replacing the wrong part fixes nothing and wastes the shop’s downtime. This is the kind of diagnostic work that separates a quick surface fix from an actual repair, and it’s exactly why we walk through every arm individually instead of assuming a single fix applies across the board on a forward lift i10.

The repair and parts sourcing

All four engaged with the same solid, consistent click, and there was no detectable play in the restraint pins under load. We documented the repair with photos and part numbers so the shop had a clean record to show the inspector, which matters in Iowa where inspectors want to see not just that a problem was fixed, but that it was fixed with the right parts and verified afterward.

The shop passed re-inspection without issue, and just as important, they now have a written baseline for what proper engagement looks and sounds like on their forward lift i10. That’s something we encourage every shop to build for themselves — know what a healthy latch sounds like when it’s working right, so a subtle change doesn’t go unnoticed for another two or three years until an inspector catches it again.
