The Setup: Seasonal Storage in a Central Iowa Garage
This particular job started like a lot of our seasonal storage calls do. The mechanic runs vehicles year-round for his mobile repair business but wanted a dedicated spot to park a personal project car up out of the way during the busy months, without giving up the ability to service a vehicle underneath it when the schedule allowed. A four post car storage lift made sense because unlike a 2-post, it doesn’t require the same concrete depth for anchor pull-out ratings, and it gives a flat runway surface that works fine for pure storage or light service work.
Before we quoted anything, we walked through his garage dimensions, door height, and asked the question that decides almost everything about a runway lift install: how thick is the slab, and is there rebar or wire mesh in it? He wasn’t sure offhand, which is common — most homeowners and even small shop owners have never had a reason to think about their slab specs until a lift installer asks. That uncertainty is exactly why we always schedule a site visit or ask for photos before finalizing an install plan.
Why Slab Thickness Matters More Than People Expect
A four post car storage lift doesn’t carry the same anchor-pullout concerns a 2-post lift does because the columns support a runway system rather than relying purely on anchor bolts to resist tipping forces. That said, thin or cracked concrete is still a problem. We generally want to see at least 4 inches of concrete for a home-garage four post install, and we strongly prefer 6 inches for anything getting regular heavy use or for larger vehicles.
In this case, the mechanic’s garage had a standard residential pour, right around 4 inches, which is workable for a four post car storage lift but leaves less margin for error than a thicker commercial slab would. We told him straight up: at 4 inches, we can anchor the columns safely for a passenger-vehicle-rated lift, but we’re not going to recommend pushing toward the top of that lift’s weight rating on a regular basis if the slab is thin and unreinforced. Cutting corners here isn’t worth the risk to the equipment or the vehicle sitting sixty inches in the air.
The Rebar Question: What We Actually Look For
Rebar changes the anchoring conversation in both directions. If we hit rebar while drilling anchor holes, it can actually be a good sign — it usually means a stronger, better-reinforced slab — but it also means we sometimes need to reposition an anchor point slightly rather than drilling straight through the steel. Cutting through rebar to force an anchor into a planned spot weakens both the anchor and the surrounding concrete, so we’d rather shift a column footprint a couple inches than fight the reinforcement.
On this Iowa install, we ran a rebar scanner across the planned footprint before drilling anything. We found scattered wire mesh reinforcement, which is common in residential pours and different from the heavier rebar grids you’d find in a commercial shop floor. Wire mesh doesn’t add much load-bearing benefit for anchor purposes, but it did mean careful anchor placement so we weren’t drilling directly into a mesh intersection. This kind of scanning step takes maybe twenty minutes but prevents a much bigger problem: a cracked anchor hole discovered after the lift is loaded with a vehicle.
Matching the Lift to Seasonal Storage Needs
Because this was primarily a seasonal storage lift rather than a daily-use service lift, we recommended a model with a straightforward mechanical or hydraulic lock system rather than the more elaborate features some commercial shops want, like automatic lock release tied into a control panel. For a mobile mechanic parking a project car for months at a time, simplicity and reliability mattered more than speed of operation.
We also talked through weight rating carefully. He wanted flexibility to store different vehicles across seasons, sometimes a lighter car, sometimes something closer to a loaded pickup. Rather than sizing the four post car storage lift tight to his lightest vehicle, we sized it with headroom above his heaviest realistic use case. That’s a mistake we see often — someone buys based on today’s vehicle and finds themselves limited a year later when their fleet or project changes. A little extra capacity costs very little at purchase time and saves a re-purchase down the road.
Install Day: What Slab Prep Actually Looked Like
On install day, our crew laid out the runway footprint according to his garage’s actual dimensions, accounting for door swing and a walking path along one side. Because the slab was on the thinner end of acceptable, we used anchors rated appropriately for that depth rather than defaulting to a standard anchor spec across the board. This is a detail a lot of DIY installs miss — using a generic anchor kit without adjusting for actual measured slab depth.
We also checked floor level across the full footprint. Older garage pours, especially in central Iowa where frost heave can shift a slab slightly over the years, aren’t always perfectly flat. A four post car storage lift needs level columns to operate the way it’s designed to, and shimming during install corrected a minor variance we found on one corner of the footprint. Skipping this step is one of the more common causes of a runway lift that binds or runs unevenly after installation, and it’s easy to miss if you’re not specifically checking for it.
