Farm shops don’t usually have a pit, and they don’t usually want to bolt anything permanently to a concrete floor that might get repurposed for equipment storage next winter. If your shop was wired for a compressor and a couple of welders 20 years ago, don’t assume the panel has room. Some rural properties also run on older transformers that weren’t sized for anything beyond lighting and small tools, and that changes the electrician’s answer. Single-Phase vs Three-Phase: What Actually Matters Here

Where this gets confusing is when shops that do have three-phase available assume it’s required or preferable. It isn’t. Three-phase motors can be more efficient at higher capacities, but for the 12,000 to 18,000 lb per-column capacities that cover most farm trucks, single-phase equipment does the job without asking you to run new service to the shop. If you’re building a new shop and haven’t run power yet, it’s worth asking your installer which configuration matches the lift models you’re actually considering, rather than over-building the electrical for a lift you haven’t picked yet.
Matching Capacity to Your Actual Fleet
We hear from farm shop owners who assume a mid-range set will handle anything with wheels, and then it turns out the fleet includes a service truck or a boom truck with a mounted crane. Those trucks aren’t just heavy — they’re unevenly loaded, with the rear axle sometimes carrying 7,000 lbs while the front carries only 3,000. That imbalance can exceed the per-column rating on a lift that would otherwise handle a 1-ton truck without issue. Inspection-Ready: Setting Up for Annual State Checks
If part of the reason you’re buying is to handle annual state inspections in-house instead of driving trucks somewhere else, mobile truck lifts are well suited to that job specifically because they get full underside access with wheels hanging free — exactly what inspectors and technicians need to check brakes, suspension components, and steering linkage properly. Set the columns, raise evenly, and you’ve got clean access without a lift arm or cross member blocking the view.
Plan your shop layout so there’s enough clear floor space to roll the columns into position around the widest vehicle you’ll inspect, plus room to walk around it once it’s up.
